CASSIAR, B.C. December 1967 First Asbestos Rolls South Clinton Creek On Schedule A page in northern mining history was turned quietly on November 1st, 1967, as the first truck-load of asbestos fibre drove south from the new Clinton Creek Mine north of Dawson City, Yukon. The big Cassiar Asbestos truck rolled into Whitehorse in the early dawn carrying 22 tons of fibre. Clinton Creek General Superintendent, F. P. Hodgson advises that production is rolling right on schedule and will gradually build up to a planned tonnage of 60,000 tons per year. At present, production is on a limited basis as the new plant goes into operation. There are approximately 250 men employed there now, with 11 families in residence in the townsite. Clinton Creek is Canada’s most northerly open pit mine. It is 140 miles south of the Arctic Circle, 60 miles west of Dawson City and 13 miles from the Yukon-Alaska border. Construction of the S24 million complex began in February, 1966, nine years after the original discovery was made. The orebody has an estimated 24 million tons reserve.
