| Page6 di . Once again we hope to see the last of the snow for a few months. As soon as the snow leaves the yards we conduct our annual spring cleanup of the townsite. Spring is the time of year to clean up your yards and homes or any areas under your control. We hope to see you co-operate in this program in making Cassiar a more pleasant town to live in. : _ During the 1975 season Cassiar Asbestos Corporation Ltd. using local students were able to clean up a few areas and plant more grass in a number of areas. We expect to continue with this program again this summer. _ We will be expanding the mosquito control program this year to include early spring spraying via airplane, with the latest type of mosquito control insecticide. © We will also be using the fogging machine to control the flies that escape the initial program. We expect to have an extensive paving program in both the townsite and plantsite this summer and this will cut down on the mud that is presently being carried onto the pavement by the cars and trucks. . 3 There is also hope for a car wash to be installed next to the entrance of the mine road and this should © also heip to keep the streets cleaner as well as keep the vehicles clean and presentable. There will be an extension of the townsite and we hope to provide services for 70 lots this season. This would include the 40 lots for the new housetrailers that will be arriving later this sumer. Cassiar will be a busy place this sumer with all the improvements and we expect it to be a better place _to live. Do you ss deserve > your dog? Your dog 48 your responsibikity. CIRO GUARDUCCI Careless use of smoking materials is the greatest single cause of deaths by fire and the largest number of fire deaths. In 1973 about 1000 fires in British Columbia were reported to have been started by smokers materials. The following excerpt from Factory Mutual's "Record" is timely: . "Ah, the day's finally over. You're in bed at last, all snuggled down and comfy. Oh, you've lit up one final cigaret? Oops, you've dozed off...and dropped it. You now have maybe 5 1/2 minutes left to live, once your mattress starts burning. If you're going to live any longer than that you're going to have to wake up by then -- and keep your wits about you. This is what Factory Mutual and Harvard University scientists found out from their third bedroom fire test, run under a research grant from the National Science Foundation through its Reserach Applied to National Needs program. No one fully understands home fires, or even if two home fires burn the same way. So to help find the answers, and save some lives, the team of scientists has built and set fires to three authentic mockups of a typical bedroom. Information was collected with dif- ferent date channels and a battery of computers. After an electric match on the mattress was ignited the fire grew slowly for three minutes, reaching a foot (0.3 m) high. It grew more rapidly then, and at four : minutes there began a steady buildup of smoke in the room. A minute or so after that the smoke was four feet (1.2 m) down from the ceiling. If you wake up now, and crawl — out the door, you'll make it. Stand up into the smoke and you probably won't. In just another minute (only 6 minutes after ignition) everything combustible in, the room will become superheated and ignite within seconds —- a phenomenon known as "flashover'’. Anyone in a room at flashover will not survive it. Ah, the day's finally over. You're in bed at last, all snuggled down and comfy. Now cut out this article and tape it to the side of your nightstand." Two businessmen were vacationing in a fancy resort. One said, "I'm here on insurance money. I collected $50,000 for fire damage." "Ne, too,” satd the other... "7 got $100,000 for flood damage." After a slight pause, the first man inquired. "Tell me how do you start a flood?".
