On Thursday, September 17, Bill Vander Zalm was welcomed by a full Canfor Theatre as the leader of _ British Columbia’s Reform Party. Mr: Vander Zalm was brought to Prince George by BC in Focus. BC in Focus is a non-profit, non-parti- san local group that aims to take an active role in British Colombian politics by acting as a watchdog on political and govern- mental policies, issues and activities. The crowd was ready and willing to enfold Bill to their bosom as long as he answered one simple ‘question: When and how are you going to form a coalition with the Liberals and drive the NDP out of office? Vander Zalm did not have the answers most of the people were looking for. He stated firmly, several times, that a coalition between the Liberal and the Reform Parties would not occur because of their differ- ences in_ ideology, especially about social programs. “Economically, we’re very close,” Vander Zalm told the crowd YOUR NEWSPAPER... when first questioned about uniting the Liberal and Reform parties, “But on social issues, the Liberals have voted with the NDP about 85% of the time.” Many people who attended the rally were worried about the Liberal and Reform Parties splitting the ! would like to see both the opposi- tion and the power being held by Free Enterprise parties.” vote in the next elec- tion, but Vander Zalm addressed that as well, “Unity is not what you want. You want to rid BC of the NDP. You would like to see a Free Enterprise party win. | would like to see both the opposition and the power being held by Free Enterprise parties.” Vander Zalm did address other issues, such as the current Tuition Freeze, Agriculture, and the Forest Practices Code. He addressed the question of the Tuition Freeze by offering the choice between keep- ing a freeze on tuition or creating jobs for graduates. . Vander Zalm suggested look- ing to California for ideas to help with local agriculture. He also said that tossing out and rewriting the Forest Practices Code was going to be part of the Reform Party’s platform. In his closing state- ments Bill Vander Zalm addressed the issues of why he had returned to politics, something he wasn’t questioned about during the entire three hour meeting. Vander Zalm expressed that he was becoming angry with the way British Columbia was being handled and felt that something had to be done about the blatant hypocrisy of the NDP, ~ and the lack of any real opposition from the Liberal Party. The evening with Bill Vander Zalm was the first in the “meet-the- leaders” series by BC In Focus. In the near future they hope to have the leaders of all of the other provincial political. parties in Prince George for the same kind of question and answer forum.
