8° CASSIAR COURIER MARCH *1978— Treat Yourself to... Ladies Luncheon - The second Ladies Monthly Lunch- eon was held-in the Arena Lounge on Tuesday, Feb, 14. About 40 ladies tucked into the delicious buffet lunch with relish, the decor had a decided Valentine's Nay touch adding to the enjoyment of the meal. The guest speaker, Mrs. Ililda Watson, was welcomed by Judy Fitzsimmons. Mrs. Watson, who is the M.L.A. for the Haines Junction riding in the Yukon Territory, noted the geographical and social Similiarities between the Yukon and Northern B. C. and then gave -the audience a precis of her own background and her advent into politics. - The speaker's topic of the "New Role of Women in our Society" sparked a lively interest and pertinent comments from those present. Mrs. Watson first pointed out the plus factor in women's changing role; no longer are they expected to stay at home in the stifling mode of yesteryear, eman- cipation is with us ina refreshing, healthy atmosphere. There is how- ever, a price tag on woman's emergence from the house - notably the cost to society of maternity leave, unemployment benefits and state aided day-care facilities. Mrs. Watson felt that we are in danger of losing control of the next generation by repulating the responsibility of caring for our families to the state. Mrs. Watson's Closing observation was that we must not forget that the cornerstone, of society is the family wit. | This generated a general discussion | and interchange of ideas. The next ladies luncheon is being | planned for Tuesday, March 14 in the Arena Lounge. The suest speaker will be Jean Harbottle fron White- horse. She is the author of 'Women in the Bush" and will speak about women in the Gold Rush days.
