Well, there was only one way to
find out what it was all about.

The caller introduced himself as
Ben H. Smith, Sheriff of Montgom-
ery County, Dayton, Ohio. He asked
if Mr. Fritzler knew one Gustav
Wiegner. The prosecutor replied:
“Why, yes. In fact he is sitting in
court right now.” The Sheriff then
swiftly outlined the facts which had
prompted the call. He had been ap-
proached by a man named Alf Mc-
Comas, who told a story about his
brother leaving Dayton, Ohio, in
company with a man named Gustay
Wiegner, bound for Alaska, some
three weeks before. The brother,
John Austin McComas, had taken
his little girl Louise with him, but
Alf had received no word from either
brother or niece, and he had begun
to worry. Wiegner, a stranger, had
met John through a “‘share the ex-
pense’ ad in a local newspaper which
John had answered. As time went
by, Alf had felt a growing uneasi-
ness and communicated with Mrs.

Loutse and Wiegner lived in this room at
the back of the Highway Cafe in Bushnell,
Nebraska.

Wiegner, then resident in Dayton.
She had told Alfred that her husband
had telephoned her long distance
from Laramie, Wyoming, about Aug.
14 or so, and asked if she would take

him back. To persuade her, he men.
tioned he now had $400, and tha:
John McComas was dead, the resul:
of an accident. Mrs. Wiegner hac
flatly refused to have anything fur.

Comas had sold his home for $1,200
and Alf knew that Wiegner did not
have anything when he left Dayton
according to the wife, at once he
suspected foul play. The Sheriff in
turn had contacted Mrs. Wiegner
later, and she informed the officer
that her husband had written her
recently, enclosing a clipping from
the “Western Nebraska Observer”
dated August 19. This clipping told
the story of the fracas at the cafe,
mentioned “‘Louise’’ as Wiegner’s
“half sister’, BUT MADE NO
MENTION OF JOHN McCOMAS.
The Sheriff coming to the end of
his story, asked County Prosecutor
Fritzler if he would interview the
pair to find out what had happened
to John McComas. Dead or alive
McComas had to be found.
