EST TUBE DETECTIVE... Science ts crowding the criminal a little harder every year. White-jacketed men, seldom heard of, are sometimes the real crime busters. * By MORTON L. BENNETT * IN MOST OF THE “who-dun-it’s,” the good looking rugged detective adds up the score in his mind and plays Nemesis; but in real life the truth is often stranger than fiction. Here in British Columbia a group of white jacketed men, seldom heard of, are sometimes the real crime busters. They're the chemists who put the proverbial two-and-two together, and cause juries to nod their heads in silent agreement. Back of the Parliament Buildings in Victoria, in a wooden building which once housed the Legislative Assembly nearly a hundred years ago, you can step inside to view a scene as modern as the atom bomb. Here are rooms full of crucibles and retorts, hissing stills and batteries of slender glass tubes. White coated figures weigh and balance. This is the laboratory of the Provincial Depart- ment of Mines, where every form of analysis is performed for the Pro- vincial Government. Annually some two thousand samples of mineral ore are assayed here. But in addition there’s work of a more dramatic nature. MARSHALL BROS.
