FEBRUARY 26, 1893 — The Dominion Government steamer “Quadra” has been placed at the disposal of the provincial government and will leave for the North in a few days with Supt. Hussey and a squad of police officers. When Mr. Charles Todd, the Indian agent arrived from the North, he reported among other things that the Kitkahtlah Indian village on Dol phin Island was surrounded by a lot of O-wee-kay-no Indians and that a number of shots had been exchanged. All the trouble arose out of the loss of a number of Indian otter hunters belonging to the tribes that are now looking for a chance to wreak their vengeance on the Kit- kahtlahs. They claim that the otter hunters were massacred on Sorrow Island by the Kitkahtlahs.—Victoria “Colonist” JULY 8, 1893.—The steamer Ina of Vancouver with 260 gallons of whiskey has been seized and her crew of three arrested. The seizure and arrests were made by Const. Anderson at Toba Inlet. —Victoria “Colonist” JULY 28, 1894—Harry Brown, the Cari boo stage robber, has been sentenced at 150 Mile House by His Honour Judge Cornwall to 15 years in the penitentiary. —Kamloops Inland Sentinel “DURING THE PAST summer, in Aug- ust last, a detachment of Provincial con- stables was sent to Tagish Lake, in the North-West Territories, to assist in establishing a Dominion Customs House at that point, and to protect the Customs Roley's Sugar Bowl Cleanliness and Courteous Service Ice Cream, Tobacco and Confectionery The Best of Fountain Service You can obtain your copy of “THE SHOULDER STRAP” here PORT ALBERNTI, B. I am pleased to be able to state that, nothwithstanding the Statf-Sergeant Srank Gallagher Passes Away DEATH CLAIMED another veteran member of the British Columbia Police when Staff-Sergt. Frank W. Gallagher died in Hospital at New Westminster, B.C., July 7th, as a result of injuries sustained in a motor accident, July 3rd, near Westminster. Staff-Sergt. Gallagher was on his annual vacation at the time and his sudden death came as a great shock to a host of friends and comrades. The funeral service held at Queen’s Avenue Church, New Westminster, was largely attended by both the public and representatives of the B. C. Police and other forces. Born 58 years ago at Corris, County Carlow, Ireland, the late Staff-Sergt. Gallagher served for a short time with the world-famous Staff-Sgt. Frank Gallagher Royal Irish Constabulary before com- ing to western Canada, and joining the B. C. Police in October, 1913. At the outbreak of World War I, he joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force, and as a member of the Mili- tary Police attached to military intelli- gence he served until the conclusion of hostilities. After the war he re- joined the Provincial force and was successively promoted Corporal, Ser- geant and Staff-Sergeant. During his long. police service he was stationed at many interior points and latterly was in charge of the Prince Rupert Police district—“D” division. The Sub-Collector of Customs at Tagish Lake, Mr. John Godson, expressed in the highest terms his appreciation of the services and conduct of the men under his control. This in itself is worthy of note, as showing the respect in which the police of this Province are held. It has already been found necessary to establish police posts in the northern part of the Province, and the number of posts will doubtless have to be largely aug- mented in the near future. Two constables have been stationed at Lake Bennett... this is an important post and will require additional assistance, owing to its close proximity to the lawless element now con- eregated in the towns of Skagway and Dyea, in the disputed territory and to the strict surveillance which will have to be exercised over the movements of this class during the coming summer.” —Extract from the Superintendent's Annual Report, 1897.
