Finance min— ister Mel Couvelier should step down for allowing this irrespon— sible precedent in a year of heavy public sector bargaining. Some 70,000 public sector employ— this ees are bargaining year alone. Does anyone believe the doctors’ pension deal won’t enter into these negotiations? Health minister John Jenson should also resign for this gross misallacaticon of our precious health care dollars. The first $25 million payment alone could have been used to hire 300 much— needed nurses in B.C. and provide surgery and cancer treatment for 1,000 British Columbians. Right now in this province two out of three British Colum— bians have no workplace pension plan at all. I’m sure those of you in that position would love to have a pension plan you could contribute to, let alone one paid entirely by taxpayers. I support better pension coverage for all workers, includ— ing doctors. But a New Democrat government would work toward a pension plan which doctors would contribute their fair share. This Social Credit gover- nment throws millions of -sur health care dollars at a doctors’ pension, but says it can’t find money to reduce surgery waiting lists or support community hos- pital across the province. It’s high time we had a government that got B.C.’s health care spending prisrities right, and put an end to government that lurches from one mistake to the next. ..It’s time. for a change.
