If you haven't been liv- ing in a cave, you will have heard that Pavel Bure was finally traded. As previously written in Over the Edge, the UNBC Rec. C hockey team had shown inter- est in obtaining his ser- vices. The team obvi- ously missed out on the Bure sweepstakes. In order to try to bring more fan support to the hockey team, the man- agement has come up with another alterna- tive. Michael Jordan... Last time he retired, Jordan tried his hand at baseball. He didn’t succeed. This retire- ment he has been hint- ing (very very briefly) on trying out for hock- ey. The UNBC Rec. C hockey team is willing to give Jordan a shot at the team. To make room on the roster four players have volun- teered to step down, if Jordan does decide to visit. The players are Brett “fruitless” Carels, Club Feature: by Jeremy Fung The UNBC Snowboarding club is one of the newer clubs on campus. Kieran Rysavy and_— Emily MacKay, who now share the position of President, started the club at the beginning of the fall 98 semester. When the signup sheet was collected there were around 45 people interested in the club. After receiving over- whelming interest, the club set out to find spon- sorship. It was quite suc- cessful with this drive and now for the $10 fee, members get a discount card good at various locations throughout Prince George. For $25 dollars members receive both a club t-shirt and the discount card. The snowboarding club kicked off its year by hik- ing to Grizzly Den. Grizzly Den is a back- country cabin located about an hour and a half east of Prince George. The group, consisting of The 1998-99 UNBC Rugby team. Cory “Can | see your 1.D” Bartium, Eric “Frenchy” Tremblay, and Steve “#20 assist- ed on that one” Donald. To raise funds for Jordan’s possible trip to visit Prince George, Snowboarding Club 20 snowboarders and 3 dogs, carried their sleeping gear and snow- boards for 2 hours to reach the cabin. They used this as a base to hike to the peak, build hits (jumps), and to do backcountry snow- boarding for the week- end. The cabin is for recreational users and there is no fee. A gas stove is fully fueled and fire wood is provided, the cabin sleeps’ 15 peo- ple comfortably. Once Powder King the UNBC hockey club has a fun night planned out (actually it is a seri- ous fund raising event). The event is on February 4th at 7:30 pm at The Keg Steakhouse. The din- opened the club arranged transportation there instead of Grizzly Den. Carpooling is a big part of the clubs bene- fits, and the email list makes it easy to find rides to good mountains. There are several more events planned for the rest of the semester. There will be several learn to ride nights at Hart .Highlands. For these events rentals will be 50% off at Sportsmart and several of the clubs level | Over The Edge Page 9 ner includes a steak dinner and a few com- plementary beers. The price of one ticket is $16.00. The proceeds go to the UNBC Hockey club. There are a limited number of instructors will help out the new boarders. There will be a Hip Hop lounge night at the Underworld. At this event there will be a snowboard raffled off. On Jan 28 at 7 PM the first all womans snowboarding video "No man's land” will be pre- sented, along’ with "Black Hawks". This event is free for mem- bers and $3 for non- members. The snow- boarding club is working with H2O water and snow to present the seats available so if you are interested con- tact Tom Hanson or Phil Cox. Northern series boarder cross. It is the first of its kind representing Northern talent. This event is fully sanctioned by BC Snowboarding Association. The qualify- ing rounds are Feb 6 at Powder King, Feb 27 at Purden and the final is on Mar 27 at Powder King. There are six cate- gories: advanced, inter- mediate, and youth for both males and females. Competitors must pre- register for a cost of $10.
