NANAIMO-WELLINGTON, COMOX McLEOD RIVER 15 East First Avenue VANCOUVER, B.C. gun, one of the last of the Flintlocks, was found in the hovel of a very old squaw. It was the cherished possession of her father then dead many years, one of the old hunters of the Crown Colony days. He lived at Lac La Hache, which in his day, was on the overland trail, used by the Hudson's Bay Co. in portaging furs from the upper Fraser River to the Columbia, en route to Fort Vancouver, Washington. To this old Indian, the Hudson’s Bay trading post seemed to hold all that made life exciting—red blankets, guns, scalp- ing knives, powder, shot, and gay beads. They were well worth the long months of hunting, for if he brought in enough beaver and marten furs, to pile one on top of the other, from the ground up to the top of the Hudson’s Bay high trade gun’s muzzle the traders would give in ex- change those goods which made his heart leap. This old musket of his, bears all the genuine old marks. Stamped “Barnett”, 1866 on the lock ; on the barrel, the Tower proof mark, “V, a crown and a small flag.” The brass dragon on the left side of the stock, to hold the lock-plate screws, is found on all the early guns of this pattern. The Flintlock and the smooth-bore barrel are in perfect order, while the only blem- ish on the full length stock, is a small splinter, half way up the barrel. The flint in place is a chip of red quartz. This 1886 issue appears to have been the last of the Flintlocks. In 1871, the same gun in every respect, appeared with a percussion lock. Although these guns were in general use among the Indians and white trappers throughout the Interior of British Colum- bia, as late as 1880, they are now quite rare. COUNSEL for the defence was cross-ex- amining the witness, a lovely blonde with big blue eyes. “Where were you,” he thundered, “on Monday night?” “Out for a run in a car.” “And where were you,” bellowed coun- sel, “‘on. Tuesday night ?” “Out for a run in a car,” repeated the blonde. Counsel leaned closer. “And what,” he said, “are you doing tomorrow night?” Prosecuting counsel leaped to his feet. “My Lord,” he protested, “I object to that question.” “And why do you object?” “Because I asked her first!’ / DEAR old soul (in curiosity shop) : “And I suppose this is another of those monstrosities, one of those futuristic paintings which you call art?” Urbane shopkeeper: “Excuse me, ma- dam, what you are looking at is a mirror!” HARRISON MILLS, B.C.
