ELECTION DAY POLLS OPEN FROM February 18, 1980. 9:00 am to 8:00 pm Liberal Rally A Liberal Party rally was held on aes 28 to meet the Liberal candidate for Skeena and to hear his views on the present political situation in Canada and how the present problems in go- ernment can be resolved in the forthcoming election. The Liberal candidate, J.J. Talstar was intro- duced by Ross Knowles, the Chairman of the Cassiar Liberal Association. Jacob J. Talstra or Jack as he is familiarly known around Terrace is a newcomer to Cassiar. He is no stranger to politics as he is a popular Terrace Alderman and has served on the Terrace Municipal Council since 1975. He has topped the polls at each election. Born in Holland, he grew up on the family farm in Terrace, went to school there and received a law degree from U.B.C. in 1973.. He has served on various muni- cipal committees over the past several years. Married, with a young family of three children, Jack shares the convictions of the majority of the residents of the northern areas of Canada; that ‘they should be able to enjoy the same pri- vileges and services as other Canadians, and that they should be able to participate fully in the economic, cultural and political life of Canada. In his address to the audience, the Liberal candi- date explained how he had been travelling through -out the riding to get a feeling of the concerns of the people in Skeena. He pointed out the problems of the geographical size of the riding, which stretches east and west from Smithers on No. 16 Highway to include the Queen Charlotte Islands and north and south from along No. 16 Highway to the Yukon bor- der. He pointed out that in this vast and diverse area people want different things, whereas some are only interested in Indian land claims and pos~ sible environmental damages, others see the pos- sibilities of Kemano II and another aluminum smelter in the riding as a boost to it’s economy and well being. Others, in the western areas are mainly interested in fisheries and the problems with the continuence of economical coastal transport. With all the diversities in the north-western part’ of the province, Jack stated that intelligent choices were necessary so that the right deci- sions could be made for the betterment of all and to achieve this required the input from all those interested. The reasons for the necessity of a Federal elec- tion at this time were explained as the P.C. bud- get had called for restraint and a tightening of the economy. Talstra stated the budget as pre- sented only took from the poor and gave to the rich as it hit the people of middle and lower in- comes by increasing individual income tax but allowing corporations a-lower rate.
