Page 2 THE GAMBLERS Every summer in Canada there are tragedies caused through mishaps in and around our Lakes. Even Cassiar is prone to such disasters and it was only the resourcefulnass of one of the ladies of Cassiar that possibly saved the life of a young child in the summer of 1969. This summer - another tragedy was narrowly averted when a father and his young son ended up in the water when their boat capsized. Neither of the occupants were wearing life jackets and only the presence of mind of the father and the assistance of people on the shore prevented a double tragedy. Remember - being a fair swimmer isn't always sufficient in our cold northern waters. Many of you will be out sailing and boating this summer and you all have at least one good reason (your own life) and some of you many good reasons (your family) to take extra special care when beating. How be you just read the BOATING SAFETY RULES listed here and who knows - the life you save MAY be your own. 1. In the case of an upset - HANG ON - never leave the boat. 2. Don't overload your boat. 3. Keep your boat away from swimmers. 4. Don't stand or play the fool in a boat. 5. Know control and correct operation of your craft . 6. You should always wear life jackets. 7. Never change seating positions in a small craft. 8. Know the areas in which you are boating. 9. Watch where you are going and beware of © strong currents. 10. If boating at night - Know your "Rules of the Road" - navigational lights and right of way. 11. Dontt drink while boating. Mr. E. Williams, Editor, "The Asbestos Sheet”, Cassiar, B.C.
