Press Releases VICTORIA - The Legislature will begin con- sidering the first major bills of the Fall session this week after the speech from the throne was adopted Wednesday by a vote of 33-16. The Premier read the latest employment figures to the Legislature, noting that the B.C. unemployment rate in August, 1973, was 4.6 per cent, down from 6.3 per cent in August, 1972. He said there were 983,000 people emploved in B.C. in August, 1973, an increase of 7.3 per cent over the 916,000 people emploved a year earlier. "There were 67,000 new jobs created in one vear under the New Democratic Partv govern- ment,’ said Barrett. He said there were 47,000 people unemployed in B.C. in August this vear, a 42 per cent improvement over the 62,00 people unemplovec a vear earlier. He added that B.C. labour force quietlv passed the one million mark recently. Premier Barrett also announced in his speech that six new povernment agencies will be created, in Chilliwack, 100 Mile House, Campbell River, Fort St. Jonn, Queen Charlotte City and Port Hardv, with negot- iations under wav for an agency at Cassiar and plans for agencies in Ucluelet, Houston and Stewart. Human Resources Minister Norman Levi announced the results of his denvartment's sufMmer employment prorram in the House last week, which will be extended another six months until March 31, 1974, “In the three months that the program has been operating we have hired 556 people. This means that we have placed these people in various government departments and non- profit operations throughout tue province. The total cost to now is $873,000. here has been a saving of $327,000 on the welfare that would have been paid to these peonle had thev not been working." Some of the people have since been naire? on a full-time basis by agencies outside of government. It was found that when people were given the chance to work they notice- ably changed their general attitude towards the future, Mr. Levi said. "We have been able to achieve a number of things in respect to the welfare recipients within this program. It has given them an entree into the work force, and it is fully our intention to follow it up to see that they go on to permanent employment." The Insurance Corporation of B.C. will begin today (Monday, September 24) selling general insurance policies through approximately 300 authorized agency firms, Transport Minister Bob Strachan has announced. He said that by late October most of B.C.'s 1,000 agency firms will be authorized to sell government insurance. He said 250 employees have been hired so far to work at ICBC headquarters in Vancouver, and the insurance corporation will likely have a staff of 1,000 when it is fully operational. The ICBC will begin selling automobile insurance on March 1, 1974, ICBC general insurance policies will include full property and casualty coverages, from homeowner and tenant packages to large industrial risks.
