ee ee BRAZILIANS TOUR MINE ; VISITORS FROM BRAZIL Mr. C. Lima and Mr. C. Ostronoff The Cassiar Mining operation was reviewed by representatives from Sociedade Anonima Mineracao De Amianto, Cana Brava, Brazil, (referred to as S.A.M.A.). on December 4th and Sth. The objectives of Mr. Carlos Ostronoff, Production Superintendent and Mr. Celestino Lima, Purchasing Superintendent, were to review the technology and methods Cassiar Mining has introduced over the years. Cassiar and S.A.M.A.’s operations are very similar as both are crysotile asbestos producers. S.A.M.A. is located 430 kilometres north west of the capital city of Brazilia, and as a one industry town, access is by air and road only. S.A.M.A. were producing their own power and support the infrastructure for the area. The significant differences are climatic conditions, temperatures 70 degree celsius spread, and employ 1,600 people. The company went into production approximately 1965 and since then a town (Minacu) has developed adjacent to the mine with a population of 25,000. S.A.M.A. produces approximately 200,000 tonnes of fibre per annum, all their present production is for domestic use. Both Mr. Ostronoff and Mr. Lima were im- pressed with the people and the operation, and found it difficult to believe that we can operate under the climatic conditions of northern B.C. They found it very difficult to adjust to wearing longjohns or to believe that some Cassiarites do not wear any. STORE TO CHANGE HANDS Negotiations are currently underway between Cassiar Mining Corporation and Skeena Valley Meats concerning the sale by Cassiar to Skeena of the Cassiar Retail Store. If the outcome of these negotiations are satisfactory to both parties, the new owners should be in charge by February 1, 1987. At that point, the store will be oper- ated by Mr. Bruno Koch of Skeena Valley Meats. Mr. Koch plans to update the meat department with professional service which will result in a better qual- ity and greater variety of product. The new operation will be a freely-run enterprise and will be a separate entity from the mining company. From its early days of operating in the basement of the Cookery facilities, the retail store was expanded into its present location in Ne early 1970s. It was added toin-l977=" 6 8 : ere ae . Andrews snatched 115 kilos and, in the clean and jerk, lifted 152% kilos for a total of 267% kilos (588.5 lbs). He won both events which qualifies him to compete in the Canadian Champ- ionships to be held in Quebec in May, 1987. “J was a scrawny wimp!” says Andrews who started lifting weights six years ago. ‘Weight training changed all that!” It requires fifteen to twenty hours per week for Andrews to train. He enjoys playing hockey, but with a full time job at Erickson Gold and his weight train- ing, there are not a lot of hours left for other activities. Wes Sullivan, founder and president of the Competi- tive Weight Lifting Association of the Yukon, trained Andrews, and although Andrews works out on his own now, he regards Sullivan with high esteem. Andrews looks forward to the event in May and feels confident in his ability. “There will be contestants from all across Canada, and I plan to do as well as I can. I know at least two other guys who | think will do well, too!” Cassiar can be proud of this young man who is an ‘example of what self-sufficiency and determination can accomplish.
