He let Reo smell the rod, then told him to “Git.” In less than half an hour Reo was back in camp with the reel. He had figured things out, en route home, too. He apparently tried to pull the reel along by its attached line, but soon found that a fishline’s yen for getting tangled is never so acute as when there are plenty of deadfalls and bushes and what-all around. So Reo finally chewed the line off short. and carried the reel home in his mouth. He found a pair of badly needed spec- tacles, too which had been lost around a fishtrap by one of Don’s helpers. Persistent human search having proven fruitless, Reo was sent for, and he located the glasses in two minutes, with a disdainful look, which plainly said, “What's the matter with these humans, anyway?” As someone once said about a king of England, “Nothing so became him in life as the manner of his leaving it,” or words to that effect. Reo always slept upon his own rug, at the foot of Don’s bed, and he never went to sleep before saying goodnight. This ceremony consisted of his nuzzling against the bed until he received a re-assur- ing pat upon the head. On the night before VE Day, Reo refused to retire, after the customary buenos noches. He returned again and again to the bedside, and would only stay contented as long as Don’s hand was resting upon his head. About 1.30 a.m. Don was roused by feeling the blankets dragged from his bed. By the time he had fully awakened and switched on a flash light, the spirit of Reo had fled from his fine, brave body. Quite aware of his approach- ing end, through that mysterious intuition that man’s noblest friend is known to possess, Reo’s only thought was to say good- bye to his master, the sole recipient, throughout his short but useful and oft- exciting life, of his unstinted devotion. Many inspired words have been spoken in tribute to dogs, none perhaps more poig- nant than those addressed to a jury in a Missouri court-room by George Vest in de- fence of a client whose dog was charged with a misdemeanour. We are sure that, if Don Ellis had listened to that address, he would have appreciated it with the under- standing that only the true dog lover pos- sesses. How truly did that country attorney speak, when he said: “Gentlemen of the jury:—The best friend a man has in the world may turn against him and become his enemy. The son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name, may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has, he may lose. A man’s reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honour when success is with us, may be the first to throw the stones of malice, when failure settles its cloud upon our heads. The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog. Phone 315 P. O.
