Black admitted Fridav that the road
from the Alaska Highwav to Casstar
is "not perfect".

Cassiar residents complained
last week that the onlv road into
the mining community 359 mtles north
of Prince Rupert had potholes bigs
enough to swim in.

Said Black: “Our prime object-
ive is to open up the north. We know
the road isn't perfect. But the
people have heen verv patient-both
the corporations and the individuals.

"We're doing our best.”

boss, Blair Whitelock. Earlier
this week she decided she would
short-cut the procedure bv using
the direct distance dialing svstem.
So she checked Page Nine of her
phone hook under the Canada listing
for area codes. Yukon Territories
wasn't listed. Neither was the
Northwest Territories, ghe noted

in passing. She called up the
phone company. Her call was shift-
ed around to several offices until]
she wound up with a woman who was
identified as Directory Service.
She asked whv the area codes weren't
listed for the Yukon = and Northwest
Territories. The girl left the
phone and eventually returned with
the answer: "T'ts because thev're
not in Canada." Eileen is a mild
nationalist but she screamed,"What
do you mean?" To which the girl
replied,""Well. vou know, Alaska

the Yukon, and NWT aren't in Can-
ada."" Eileen: "Please don't give
the rest of the countrv awav:"

She eventually got the area code

of the Yukon which is 403, but she's
still waiting for an admission that
the Yukon is in Canada.
