"MEN’S CENTER SET BACK : es Se mysterious ripping down of posters prevents center from organizing by Ian King» It seemed inevitable, and it happened. A group of students at UNBC have made plans to establish a men's resource centre. Well, sort of. On Friday, November 4, some signs were posted on campus announcing the formation of a men's resource centre, opposite the Winter- garden, in some currently unused space. The posters then noted that issues like alcohol and drug abuse, basic human rights, entrenched gender biases and more would be discussed. By Saturday, the more conspicuous signs had been tom down. There were only a few left by Sunday evening, and none remained by Monday morning, (less than 72 hours after the signs were posted). One of the students involved AUDREY FIRST TO SEE UNBC On October 31st, Audrey McLaughlin spoke to UNBC students and staff about socialism in the twenty-first century. Her presentation had extra significance because she is the in the men's resource centre confirmed that they had not been told to remove the signs and had no idea as.to who may have torn them down. The result of the signs being quickly removed was that very few people on campus even knew that there was a movement to establish a men's they thought the tearing down of signs was a cheap shot. centre; however, they thought that tearing the signs down was a bit of a cheap shot. What led to the signs being posted in the first place? In the first week of November, some frustrated UNBC students had gotten together, feeling a bit down about all the "gender talk" on campus. They were initially inspired by the Letters to the Editor in Over the Edge issue #2, by Charles Hogg first leader of a national party to visit the UNBC campus. The presentation was at 2:30pm-3:30pm and included an open question period. The focus of the talk was the role of socialism in Canada as a moderating power to the right and how this role will be played in the future. The Political Science Student’s Association (PSSA) and the UNBC Public Lecture Series co-sponsored the event, and both plan to sponsor more speakers in the future. tY CONNIE BRETT TRAVEL CONSULTANT PARKWOOD MALL 1548 15th Avenue Se a ee Ppp ppp ppp wy EXPRESS Seven Seas Travel Prince George, B.C., Canada V2L 3X3 Phone (604) 564-8700 Fax (604) 561-0060 a) Representative 4444 but realized that they could do something constructive instead. One individual who was willing to talk was Ray Zukanovic. Ray's roommates were discussing the idea, which piqued his interest. The idea is simple. Those involved wanted to set up a table near the fireplace opposite the Wintergarden to be periodically staffed by volunteers. Those interested in the centre felt that a serious blow was dealt when the posters were removed, as the intent of the centre was to assist all UNBC students. The students involved in the men's resource centre are continuing to work on the project and raise awaréness about what they are trying to accomplish. % MENS $79.99 9am - 5:30 p.m. Friday: 9 a.m. - 7 p.m Sz x
