boys found the machine, named
“PESCO” (name of manufacturers),
could turn out 1,000 bullets an hour.

Victoria has lost two of its best
shots in Inspector Jake Young, who
was transferred to Nova Scotia by the
R.C.M.P., and Joe Gibault, who quit
the national force and is at Kitimat.
They used to be in action for years
at every local competitive shoot and
are considered among Canada’s best
with the pistol. Inspector Webb is
rated alongside them. Jack Henry,
another good R.C.M.P. shot, has also
left the local scene, being transferred
to Newfoundland.

Perennial visitors to the annual city
police shoot are U.S. national and in-
ternationally-known pistol-packin’
mammas and pappas like Gertrude
Backstrom, Hoquiam, Wash., prob-
ably the nation’s top female name at
the target ranges; Gene O'Dell of
Raymond, Wash.; Ed Warmsley,
Seattle Police; Bob Schaefer, Olympia,
Wash.; Offert Pinion, U.S. Border
Patrol.

Other annual visitors and ranking

marksmen from south of the border
are Mel Rogers of the U.S. Border
Patrol; Capt. Walt Day of Seattle
police; Henry Tronas of the Border
Patrol and Dick Trueblood from the
State of Washington.

Genial O’Dell, by the way, who was
one of Ike Eisenhower’s personal
body-guard overseas in the Second
World War, was the man who gave
Mrs. Backstrom the schooling that has
resulted in her rising to international
fame with the pistol.

“We love coming here every year.
You've such a fine spirit and your
hospitality is wonderful,” O’Dell told
this reporter on his last visit.

After the two-day tourney each year
it is concluded with a bang-up cocktail
party, supper, prize-presentation and
dance.

The Victoria Board of Police Com-
missioners never refuse a money grant
to send its prize police pistol team
away to take part in other Pacific
Northwest revolver tournaments.

They like to see Victoria repre-
sented as much as possible in outside
competition and they like the fine
spirit that has been built up away
from home through the pistol club.
