training, in all the varied aspects of a modern
police organization, progress has been the
keynote. For instance, its short-wave radio
network, established eleven years ago, was
the first of its kind on the continent, and is
still the only system of its kind in Canada.
Whether it’s the climate that promotes this
feverish desire to excel or inordinate pride
in their province, British Columbia’s police-
men do things with a will. And one of the
things in which they excel is revolver shoot-
ing!

The inspiration for the extraordinary
brand of police marksmanship developed on
the Pacific slope was J. A. Young, at the
moment a sergeant in the Force’s criminal
investigation branch at Victoria. As a boy
Young attended school in Alberta and took
an interest in small bore rifle shooting. He

became so expert that the principal of the
school prophesied that if Master Young
stayed with his shooting he would one day
be one of Canada’s top-flight marksmen.
Like many another young Albertan,
Young came to the coast, settled in North

Vancouver and eventually joined that city’s
police force. He still kept up his interest in
shooting and qualified for a place on the team
which officially represented his province at
the annual Dominion of Canada Rifle Asso-
ciation matches for four consecutive years
