horses were taken along to help at the portages,
or overland tracks, where everything, canoes
included, must be carried; but their number was
strictly limited, and Jinks, being a small beast
of light build, had been counted out.

“Well, at least I can trade him for a dug-out
canoe,” Jim consoled himself when the pony
had been ordered to be left behind. ‘

So for a day or two he went in and out
among the Indians in the settlement nearby,
bargaining as shrewdly as he knew how, but
in the end he had to be content with a very
small dugout, roughly made, undecorated,
though strong and well balanced. It had been
built for one person only but would hold two if
necessary. He and Arthur looked forward to
navigating the little craft together, going ahead
of the rafts and exploring the way.

“Well, Jim, what are you going to name
your canoe?’ Betty asked him the night before
they were to break camp and take to the rafts.

“T’ll like to name her Jinks, the same as my
pony, only a boat is always a she.”

“Jinks isn’t a bit a pretty name,” remarked
Betty.
