O’Brien’s career upon the scaffold.

When Black Fournier and Ed La-
Belle committed their revolting crime
it was Constable “Tiny” Burns and
Corporal Piper who dogged their
heels until LaBelle was whisked from
amongst hordes of railroad workers in
distant Idaho to join his swarthy com-
panion in crime upon the Dawson
gallows.

Mounties Turn Road Builders

Trail-blazers, Indian fighters, crim-
inal chasers and _ law-givers, the
Mounties next turned road builders.
From the uprising town of Edmonton,
Constantine led his  axe-swinging
corps through the dense spruce forests
of the Athabasca to the Pelly banks,
slashing an overland road for the
gold-seeking hordes who continued to
flock north to the famed Klondyke.

From across the rugged mountain
barrier the moccasin telegraph
brought word of the lawless depravity
of the mongrel hordes of American
whalers that were making a United
States outpost of Herschel Island,
Yukon ‘Territory. Recruiting their
motley crews of Negroes, Portugese,
Russians, Hawaiians and Celestials
from the brothels of the Barbary
Coast they sailed each year from San
Francisco carrying disease, drunken-
ness and death to the fur-clad and
once happy Eskimos of the polar
spaces.

At last Commissioners Perry’s
roving eyes became focussed on this
Arctic Babylon. And, in the summer
of 1903, the scarlet tunics of the
Mounted appeared beside the Polar
sea, and upon the glacial mud of
Herschel Island arose the northern-
most barracks of the force.

“A lot of liquor came ashore the
first couple of days,” wrote Corporal
Sutherland. “A Huskie fired a shot at
Sergeant Fitzgerald (who, a few years

later, was destined to lose his life and
perish with his entire patrol in the
snow-filled mountain passes to the
westward) . . . we’re powerless except
for our revolvers . . . if you could only
know a tenth of what these whalers
have been up to. If we hadn’t been
here at ship-time the beach would
have been a howling, crying, fighting
mob of men, women and children!”
The police came none too soon. Al-
ready the Eskimo population had
been reduced from 2,000 to 400.
Poison and Witchcraft

Into the weetigo-haunted forests of
Keewatin, hunting grounds of tawny
Crees and pagan Saulteaux appeared
the red-coated Shimaganisuk next.
Ruled by pagan medicine men with
poison and witchcraft, the outlaw
Saulteaux soon came to grips with the
Mounted Police. Into the frozen
wilderness mushed young Constable
O'Neill. Sapwaste, a young Indian
girl, had been brutally executed with
all the barbaric rites attending a
weetigo killing. Twenty more murders
were laid at the hands of Pecequan,
the witchcraft-crazed medicine man.

From the log barracks at Norway
House set out Corporal Cashman with
three dog-teams and three half-breed
drivers to subdue a thousand hostile
redskins. Joined by O'Neill they
mushed into the hunting grounds of
these redskinned outlaws, dreaded by
all surrounding tribes. Met by Pece-
quan’s coppery warriors with loaded
muskets they accomplished the seem-
ingly impossible; arrested the Chief
and Medicine Man ... and took them
back to Norway House for trial—
breaking forever the rule of the pagan
witch doctors.
