10 September 22, 2010 + Over the Edge Pops in the Pews Symphony Orchestra goes Top 40 GRACE WADDELL PHOTO EDITOR “Pops in the Pews,” as it was dubbed by my Music Director for the Prince George Symphony Orchestra, took place on Sunday at St Micheal’s Church rather than Fort George Park as planned. Being one of the musicians in this performance, | was personally glad to be inside rather than brave the 9 degree rain. As the venue change was a last minute decision, it was a pleasant surprise to see so many people in attendance, filling the church and continuing to come in as the performance began, leaving standing room only by the third work. The afternoon began with some familiar classical works such as Brahms’ “Hungarian Dance no. 5” and Rossini’s “Barber of Seville” Overture. The crowd at this event was quite enthusiastic and it was nice to see many young people and families in attendance, especially since the average age of attendance to PGSO concerts is usually around ancient. Several popular works were played as well, including selections from The Sound of Music, the theme from The Pink Panther and a Michael Jackson medley which seemed like another attempt to cash in on celebrity death. However, it was engaging for the audience. The concert concluded with several film score selections such as Harry Potter, Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean and Titanic. This concert, as the opening of the 40" season for the PGSO, offered a chance for the public to experience the more casual side of the orchestra and perhaps begin to appreciate it as a form of entertainment accessible to everyone, not something reserved for the dwindling elderly upper middle class. This season the PGSO is featuring several local soloists and reduced rates for people under 25. “mk | Stprember 12", 2010 Fort George Park ' Pavuneni we Dele | for the online application 2:00 pM. While it’s more often than not a bittersweet journey through fallen leaves and frosty breath, I’ve always been stoked on starting school: new smells, new books, new classes, new boys to objectify in the hallway and later cry over once they’ve painfully rejected you. Last issue saw my album picks for the summer, but the transition into something a bit more calming and introspective was quick. As soon as the temperature drops, | need my brooding, heart-wrenching music to further chill the depths of my heart. Not to mention that | can’t very well be dancing like a fool to my rap music when there are papers to be written and hopes to be crushed. little simultaneously. The Album Leaf — The Enchanted Hill EP: I’m one of those people that need either an incredibly familiar album or an instrumental one in order to get anything done with my life. This means homework. | enjoy most of the albums that The Album Leaf puts out, but this EP really sticks. It’s perfect for that moment that you realize the stress you’ve put onto yourself is too much, or when you need something atmospheric and relaxing to get through the final hours of a paper. If you’ve got a cup of tea and low mood lighting, then you’ve got the perfect evening set before you to check out this album. Sounds like: Do Make Say Think, Explosions In the Sky Dinosaur Jr — Without a Sound: | don’t have a favourite Dinosaur Jr album, but | am confident that | could listen to the song “Over Your Shoulder” every day until | die. J. Mascis may be ugly, but he is incredible at playing guitar and somehow coming up with the perfect lyric in very few words. If you are the walking around type and you start to feel the pressure from midterms and papers, grab your headphones and take this album out into the woods with you. “Feel Your Pain” is one of the few songs that is capable of making me feel so much and so Sounds like: Built To Spill, Pavement ONLINE SOURCE ‘Take a break from your midterms with this album Jens Lekman — Oh You’re So Silent Jens: Jens Lekman has a beautiful, classical voice, and this, paired with the haunting, sorrowful piano on certain tracks, makes me think of and long for nothing more than falling, colourful leaves. If you’re prone to the September blues, | recommend listening to the album while you walk next to a curb, kicking leaves all around you. This album is the simplest cure for any self-doubt you might have. While | find the tone of his voice to be morose, the way that it juxtaposes the content of his music creates something really inspiring and uplifting. Sounds like: Peter Bjorn and John, The Magnetic Fields Joanna Newsom -— Have One On Me: This young lady has one startling voice. At a first listen, you might not know what to make of it. Is that your grandmother singing, or is it just some bizarre CocoRosie tribute band? It’s neither of those things, and it is beautiful. Her talent astounds me. Joanna Newsom plays the harp and writes lovely lyrics about very normal things. When | listen to her | wonder how she manages to put into words something | thought | could only feel. Have One On Me is an epic album, and though it might not be the easiest introduction to her music, | can’t overlook it this time. It comes in a triple- disc format and runs just over two hours. If you like adventures and you feel up for a challenge, give this album a spin. Sounds like: CocoRosie, St. Vincent Kevin Devine — Put Your Ghost To Rest: Even if | didn’t like this album at this time of year, | wouldn't be able to get it out of my head if | tried. It reminds me of the autumn | spent living in a trailer, sharing my bed with my rabbit. | had limited belongings with me, but for some reason this heartbreaking album made it’s way into my suitcase. | listened to it every morning while | built up courage to face another tough day. Kevin Devine has a way of writing lyrics that focus on a harsh truth that sometimes we don’t want to acknowledge. Every autumn humbles me and so does this album. | might just be in love with Kevin Devine, but I’m pretty sure he has an incredible gift.
