Now, let’s see the licence. Probably won't do much good.” He jotted the number down. “Most likely these birds were us- ing a stolen car.” “Hit the bush,” he turned to a crowd of khaki-clad patrolmen, “and give it a thorough going-over. [rom the way these guys hit this dead-end road they can’t know the neighbourhood. May be floun- dering around there yet. They’re hopped up,” he warned, “so don’t take any chances.” Fifteen patrolmen were soon herding through the scented heat of the woods, making enough noise to awaken the dead. An hour’s intensive beating of the bush failed, however, to flush any fugitive but rewarded them with the dead Inspector’s five money bags, three partially empty. Later these gave up nearly a thousand dollars in silver. Evidently the killers had found them too heavy but had scooped up the paper currency totalling around five hundred dollars. Back at headquarters, while awaiting the report of the fingerprint department, Captain Silverstein phoned the Motor Vehicle Bureau and learned that the Pon- tiac was registered in the name of Lucy Camille of New York. Further inquiries reported her as single, aged 24 and weighed around 108 pounds. “Try and figure this one out,” the Captain turned a puzzled face to Attwell. “Lucy Camille, the owner of this busted Pontiac’s single and only weighs 108 pounds. What would a small jane like that be doing with this big sedan? Most of these girls go for a flash coupe.” “The answer,’ retorted Attwell, “is to look up this Camille girl. Maybe,” his eyes narrowed, “the car wasn’t stolen!” FINGERPRINTS GIVE First CLUE The telephone at Silverstein’s elbow shrilled. Clapping the receiver to his ear he passed on the information. “They've identified the prints on the wheel of that Pontiac. Belong to a small-time chiseller, ‘Dopey’ Marino. His last address was somewhere in Harlem.” Slipping on his coat he turned to Attwell. “I’m going to look up Captain Carey of the New York Homicide squad and give this Camille jane the once-over. If that car wasn’t stolen then she must know plenty!” With Carey at the wheel, Silverstein headed through the congested streets of Manhattan and finally entered a brown- stone apartment block that had evidently seen better days. Anxiously they scanned the names on the mail-boxes in the hall, redolent with the odour of boiling cab- bage. “No Lucy Camille here,” growled Attwell. Disappointed, they tackled the caretaker, only to learn that the girl had left three months before without leaving any forwarding address. P. O.
