October 27, 2004 Letters You are a Slave! Dear Editor: Is slavery allowed in Canada? When you were a child; did you dream of becoming a slave? Why do we human beings allow the government to enslave us? We willingly make the government our master and us, the slaves to this master. Is not government for the use of human beings? Here are a few reasons we are slaves with only the illusion of freedom. 1. We human beings work in exchange for many benefits, one of which is money. We are then allowed by the government to take a percentage of this money and trade it for goods and/or services such as clothes and food. The per- centage which our master keeps for itself is named Income Tax. 2. We as CANADIAN citizens are not allowed to own land, even if you have bought the land. The - government still owns the land, you just “rent” the land... until you stop paying your property taxes, and then the government will move you off of its land. 3. Everything you own (clothes, food etc.) is not yours. This is because it was bought and/or made with the exchange of money. The circulation of money in Canada is known as CANADIAN dollars. And since the GOVERN- MENT OF CANADA supplies these funds and you use these funds to buy your clothes, food, etc. it is never yours. If it was bought with CANADIAN money, then it is the rightful owner of the CANADIAN government. If it was bought with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA money, then it is the rightful owner of the UNITED STATES OF. AMERICA. Therefore you actually don’t own anything. Everything you thought you owned is the government's. That is why the government can take any and all goods from its cit- izens. The only thing the government cannot take away from you is what you have within yourself... That is why knowledge is sacred. >> Scott Stroshin Dear Editor: What the heck is with the park- ing lot??? It’s a freakin’ skating rink. It’s almost like winter in the north was a complete surprise to the maintenance department. I’m pretty sure that Dr. Jago said part of the reason our tuition was rising so astronomically was to ensure that the quality of our services here at the university would be maintained. I’ll tell you something I have no problem paying for the maintenance of our, services as long as those services have actual- ly been maintained. It’s not bad enough that there’s not enough parking to begin with they have to further the insult by forcing stu- dents to skate to their cars every day. And if you’re crossing the street you're never quite sure-if an oncoming car is actually going to stop or if it’s going to just keep — sliding. Ihave never seen so much terror in the eyes of my fellow stu- dents as I have this past week as they try to navigate their way to their vehicles. Would it hurt to throw a little salt around here and there??? Or sprinkle some sand in the trouble spots (which happen to be the whole parking lot)? Maybe by the time this letter gets printed we will have been blessed with some warmer weather (ha!!!) and the ice will have melted and we “can once again feel safe. * Until the next time it snows...Thanks for your attention in this very impor- tant matter. >> Some Very, Very, Very Concerned, Clumsy and Confused Students Students Captivated by The UNBC Apprentice Dear Editor: All of us on the Business Undergraduate Student Society would like to apologize for the poor picture and lack of article. regarding the UNBC Apprentice in the last edition of Over The Edge. In our opinion this was an out- standing opportunity for an up and coming journalist to cover an interesting story that touched the lives of many UNBC students and faculty. You may be interested to note that they did however find time to write a detailed article regarding zombies at UNBC. BUGSS put in countless hours finding sponsors, overseeing activ- ities and organizing this event: We feel disappointed that participants and BUGSS were not given credit for their efforts. The UNBC Apprentice was on opportunity for students of all fields of study to compete in a number of business scenarios. “was Students utilized their creativity and business know-how to out perform their competition. Tasks included lemonade sales, return on investment, and the creation of an advertising campaign. Many students planned their ‘days around seeing what innovative ideas the teams would come up with next. This is likely going to be. an annual contest because of the huge popularity that the event brought to UNBC. In the end it was team Barton Insurance that prevailed victorious and Roman appointed the UNBC Apprentice. Thank you all for par- ticipating and supporting this out- standing competition. Who knows perhaps next year Over The Edge will participate. >> Max Powers Disgruntled BUGSS Board Member eee >> letter ans NUGSS Big Man on Campus “The only thing people love more than a hero is to see a hero fail, fall, and die trying” - The Green Goblin. Wow October the month of turkey’s, midterms, and Snow? After an issue off due to rampag- ing butterball turkeys, I’m back and ready to update the countless masses on the goings on at NUGSS. People always come up to me and ask “Yo J, how do you like your job so far?” The answer so far has been pretty consistent lately; the reply goes something like “It has its ups and downs, but mostly positives!” In my short term in office so far I’ve had the pleasure of meeting many of the political bigwigs that have rolled through town and UNBC. From the Premier Gordo, to the Governor General Adrienne Clarkson, to the hung over rockers -of SUM 41 at last month’s Backyard BBQ. However the opposite side of the coin brings personal attacks from students still reeling over last month’s “Men in the world” arti- cle; from name calling to getting in my face trying to further drag on conflict. To me the issue is a dead one; the issue was peacefully resolved to all parties involved. Yet certain individuals with way to much time on their hands continue to concoct false allegations against NUGSS and myself. It’s funny to me that I am still trying to explain this to one or two students but I'll do this one more time to humor everyone. First of all, NUGSS acted well within its power in its dealings with OTE, so those of you ‘out there that disagree with me on this, should read the contract OTE signed with us. It’s pretty simple we pay OTE as a service under NUGSS, but there are strings. Nothing in life is free, if a student complains about OTE, it’s their money running that paper, every- one is accountable when it comes to other peoples money, EVERY- ONE. So to call the NUGSS executive rash, irresponsible etc is wrong, take a step back and ask yourself this, if everyone else around you is happy with the decision a month later, maybe it is you that is acting rash and irresponsible by having hissy fits and throwing around veiled threats? The issue garnered attention from both national and provincial newspapers, but to me any public- ity is good publicity, if the Province wants to report only one side of the story... Good for them, if the head of some Canadian University agency is upset...Too” bad. If you don’t like how things are run here in Canada, as Homer Simpson says “Move to Russia!” I will not apologize for my actions, should a police officer be sorry for doing his job catching criminals? Nope, and neither am I. So go ahead and continue making up tabloid stories about me to try and build upon your false sense of real- ity, did I have a horrible child hood; was I raised by wolves, a genetically engineered Super J? Whatever helps you to sleep at night, it just makes me laugh. _OTE is going to be holding a ref- erendum to put the power back with the students. Do you think that OTE is worth 10 doHars a year of your money (refundable)? If the referendum passes, OTE will gain the freedom it yearns for, as well as a monetary increase that will triple its current budget to the 30 thou- sand dollar range. But it is up to you now; use your wallet and your democratic right to vote to decide the future of OTE. : On a closing note, part of my election platform last year was that I was going to donate 1000 dollars of my hard earned cash from my NUGSS honoraria to a bursary for students. So Fall brings all of the above as well as a shot at the first 500$ of my money, so here’s what you have to do,.I want a letter less than two pages, outlining why you deserve my money, toss in some letters of reference outlining your volunteer experience and commu- nity service within UNBC. No high GPA is necessary, the smart kids win all the other scholarships, this is about how you make UNBC better! Bring your package in with all your info to the NUGSS office by November 19 and tell em that J sent you!
