A FOREWORD ip COMPILING the information set forth herein no attempt has been made to stress unduly the special features or advantages of any particu- lar area. The matter contained in this booklet comprises very largely a simple statement of facts based upon material gathered from the most reliable sources in the various districts and agricultural tracts considered best adapted for settlement adjacent to the line of the Pacific Great Eastern Railway. These data are supplemented by authentic reports and actual surveys made by competent departmental and field officials. ot the British Columbia Government. Its main object is to answer in a M practical way the many questions asked by land-seekers and others and to give the public at large a more intimate knowledge of the wealth of natural resources await- ing development in the great virgin: territory tributary to the railway. | eee British Columbia enjoys vastly improved transportation facil- ities to expanding local markets, and Middle West and Eastern markets as well. Yet, strangely enough, due to her comparatively small rural population and the more rapid peopling of her towns and industrial centres, the Province is compelled to import several million dollars’ worth of agricultural products annually. There is being recorded a constantly increasing demand for foodstuffs which could be profitably grown on British Columbia soil. Perhaps no better assurance could be given of the financial returns from judicious mixed-farming and ranching operations throughout the fertile domain served by the Pacific Great Eastern Railway. T IS manifestly impossible in the circumscribed limits of this booklet | to cover its subject-matter in detail. Jn all cases actual land-seekcrs are strongly urged to give their personal inspection to lands in which they may become interested. In this they will have the hearty co-operation of the Pacific Great Eastern Railway, which has inaugurated for this purpose a special Department of Colonization. As intending settlers are absolutely safeguarded from speculators and dubious ventures when making their inspection, they will find it good policy to get in touch as early as possible with THE DIRECTOR OF LAND SETTLEMENT in person.
