Over the Edge Jan 12,1996 Page 7 UNBC Enrolment Statistics Show a 60% Increase In Enrolment Over Last Year. By Vince Yim Within the last few years, the student population of UNBC has shown massive changes. In the fall 1995 semester, there were 2373 students registered in courses, up a considerable amount from 1408 last year. Increases in numbers of all sorts have been seen in various facets of the school community. The most popular programs in the way of number of students enrolled were Business/Commerce, Natural Resource Management, Psychology, Environmental Studies and First Nations Studies. First Nations Studies is a point of interest as it has seen the largest percentage growth of student enrollment of any degree program at UNBC. Last year, 41 students were registered in the program, while this fall there were 145 students enrolled. For the most part, this large increase is due to the fact that the Wilp Wilxo-oskwhl Nisga’a (Nisga’a House of Higher Learning) is holding the program in Nass Valley, north of Terrace, where 88 students are enrolled. Of the twelve communities outside Prince George offering courses, Nisga’a Studies has been the most popular offering. Other increases in student numbers include an increase of over 200 percent in the number of First Nations students (209 students, up from 77 last year). 36% of those students were on the Prince George campus. Another increase of student numbers is the 194 graduate students, up from 113 last year. This roughly constitutes a 58 percent increase. Other statistics of interest include the fact that 1233 students were from Northern BC, which constitutes for 52 percent of all the students at UNBC. Also, 92% of the students were at the undergraduate level, . and 78% of the students attend the University full time. Keep in mind that all these statistics cover the 1994-95 fall semester. Details are not available for the current Winter semester, although & ‘massive changes are not expected.
