Ghaeles the new Police Act the magistrates, who here- tofore had taken some part in the detec- tion and investigation of crimes, were re- lieved of such duties, which were now handled entirely by the Police. To this new body a Criminal Investigation Depart- ment was added under Inspector W. J. Clarke, who had seen the working of the C.LD. at Scotland Yard and was able to model his department on the lines of those employed in London. It soon became ap- parent that a staff of trained, intelligent natives would be of great service to ‘this department, but hundreds of natives had to be tried out before a candidate of any prom- ise could be found. One of the greatest problems was to get a native detective who could be depended upon to conceal his identity. On one occasion two natives were chosen to work on a sheep stealing case. They were coached carefully and warned to use the utmost discretion. Looking very wise the pair of them went out, but returned later and explained that they could not very well go on because they had no badges to show that they were members of the police force. There is one great difficulty which the native detective has to contend with. When a Zulu is seen walking through the country every native he meets asks what his business is, where he is from and where he is going to. The arrival of a strange native is always reported to the local chief and the whole tribe grows suspicious until they know everything about him. THE BOER WaAR The Natal Police took a very active part in the Boer War of 1899-1902; from the beginning to the end the field force was constantly on active service. Orders were issued to all police in Northern Natal to be ready to retire from the large Boer Army which commenced to cross the passes of the Drakensberg as soon as war was de- clared. The detachment at De Jager’s Drift was left to watch the movements of the enemy across the Buffalo River. The men of this detachment, a sergeant and six troopers, were all captured with their horses except one trooper, who hid him- self when the Boers galloped up, and made his way to the British lines under the cover of darkness. When the first battle of the war was fought at Talana Hill on October 9th, 1899 Colonel Dartnell with a small force of the Police accompanied General Penn Symons, who was mortally wounded in the fight. In this battle the British drove the Boers from their position on the hill, but had to retire next day, being vastly outnumbered by the enemy. Then followed another Boer defeat at Eland’s Laagte, where two hundred of the enemy were captured. These ptisonrs were escorted to Pietermaritzburg by a party of the Police Field Force.
