Six Mile Lake Sawmills Ltd. MANUFACTURERS OF ROUGH AND DRESSED WESTERN SPRUCE LUMBER PRINCE GEORGE British Columbia Nootka, under the mistaken impression that it was the Indian name for the area. In reality, Nootka is an approximation of “nootk-sitl’”’, meaning “to go around” or “to make a circuit”. When Cook landed, according to one story the Indians were doing circular dances on the beach, and when he asked the name of the place they thought he referred to the form of their dance. They replied “Nootka”. A focal point tor many Indian trails’ in by-gone days, Penticton means literally “the meeting of the ways”; and Port Co- quitlam’s name is derived from a Salish word meaning “a small red salmon’. “Yoho” was a favourite exclamation of surprise among the Cree tribes, and is today the designation of the glacier and its environs in the Kootenay district. Many of our most colourful place- names owe their origin to early inhabitants who had no particular claim to fame. Kaslo perpetuates the name of John Kas- leau, a French-Canadian trapper, who pushed his way to the head of Kootenay Lake while searching for a likely spot for placer mining. Quesnel was named in honour of Jules Maurice Quesnel, a clerk of the North West Company, who was at one time a fellow-traveller of Simon Fraser in the exploration of the Iraser River. Still other B.C. place-names are de- rived from more famous personages, many of whom never set foot in the proy- ince. Thus we have Prince George, form- erly Fort George, and deriving its name from George III. of England; and the Queen Charlottes, honouring the memory of his reyal consort. Revelstoke, founded in 1886, was so designated in honour of Lord Revelstoke, head of the famous British banking firm of Baring Bros. The most recent landmark to acquire a distinguished name was, of course, Mt. Eisenhower. The city of Prince Rupert was granted its name in 1906 by officers of the Grand Trunk Pacific, in honour of the illustrious first governor of the Hudson’s Bay Com- pany. The name was selected as the ig sult of open competition in the public press, a prize being offered for the best suggestion submitted. Out of the 12,000 names received, the officials chose “Prince Rupert”, the entry of a Miss Eleanor MacDonald of Winnipeg. “Ladysmith” was the name given to that Vancouver Island centre by James Phone 88 B.C.
