~oO ) ¢ COMMENCEMENT ANNUAL — TRIP TO LYTTON The Lytton Trip i ~_D ERHAPS one of the most thrilling experiences of the year was the trip over the new Fraser Canyon Highway when the girls’ and boys’ basketball teams went to Lytton to play a return game with St. George’s Residential School. We left Coqualeetza in the early hours, everybody wide awake and keen for the day ahead. The experience was unique in that we made, we believe, the first bus trip over the new highway. Never shall we forget the thrill of riding over a road that wound its way up and up until it became a mere thread along a mountain skyline. It amazes one to think how the early settlers travelled with horse and wagon, years ago, along the old Cariboo Highway, which now remains here and there a mere trail clinging to the face of the mountain. To us the new road, which is very much wider and safer, offered suspense enough. When at last we reached a level stretch and breathed more freely a very real danger presented itself. A tree fell directly in the path of the bus. Seeing it fall the driver applied the brakes and just in time. It caught the front lamps of the bus, otherwise no serious damage was done and fortunately no one injured. Shortly after this averted disaster, we came to the famous Alexandria bridge. Our joy in crossing a new bridge was somewhat modified when we found that it was a toll bridge and our finances were depleted six dollars each way. When we reached St. George’s School we were welcomed by Principal and Mrs. Lett and after par- taking of refreshments we went to the gymnasium where the games were played. Coqualeetza won the boys’ game; Lytton won the girls’ game. The return trip was started at 5:30 p.m. Being on the “outside” of the road this time we were glad that it was soon dark so that we could not see the precipitous sides which fell away.to the Fraser River 2000 feet below. Mile after mile we swung around the hairpin turns of the mountain range of which there are twenty-two to the mile. We all voted Mr. Cunningham a careful and skilful driver. By twelve o’clock that night we were all tired and happy and safely back at school. Twenty-three
