YEAR— END “ASSEMBLY

The final function of the 1985-86 school year was
held on Thursday, June 27. In the morning a slide-tape
retrospect of the past year’s activities at Snowridge was
presented to the students by Mr. Waldera. It was interest-
ing and well received by all.

In the afternoon Snowridge held the year-end
Assembly. The following is a description of the various

You will note that there are several programs to
which no staff member has been assigned. It has been de-
cided that the staff members to be assigned to these pro-
grams will not be engaged until September, when the
District. has a better view of Snowridge’s actual enrolment.
Should the enrolment approach this year’s level the Dis-
trict will hire an additional staff member. However,

- should the enrolment be significantly less than the current

170 plus the District will have to review its options.

SCHOOL OPENING
School starts again on Tuesday, September 2. On that
day only attendance will be as follows:
Kindergarten — 10:00 a.m. — 1130 a.m.
Grades 1 to 7 — 10:00 a.m. — 12:00 noon and
1:00 p.m. — 2:00 p.m.

Snowridge will be operating in these hours to permit
the staff time to hold meetings regarding internal proced-
ures, etc. before students actually arrive and to permit
time for all those administrative tasks necessary to a

smooth start of the new school year.

Community Club News"

Reflections of a
Season Past

As summer faithfully fights its way from a long win-
ter and desperate spring, to its final crescendo on June 27,
it lends to us not only a sense of growing excitement, but
allows a brief period from which to reflect on the past
year we are leaving behind. -

For the next few minutes while you read this article,
let your mind drift back to October when winter began to
wrap its icy blanket around us as we prepared for the dark
months ahead.

The Arena was opening for what promised to be an-
other successful season. Minor Hockey and the Blue Va-

_ ley Figure Skating Club began their bingos, while a group

of keen individuals tackled the ever-important C.P.R. Clin-
ic. Mini Flea Markets began to happen, as local artists and
fabricators displayed their wares. Halloween came and

went with the local band adding to the midnight madness. °

As the ‘approach to December 24th continued, the
R.C.M.P. celebrated with a spectacular Ball, which saw the
national R.C.M.P. Dance Band flown in for the occasion.
The Ptarmigan Players finished their furious onslaught of
the season with an overwhelmingly successful dinner thea-
tre. Fashion was again evident as our local beauties and
“Handsome Harries” strutted the latest creations. Rec
Hockey began a series of mini-tournaments that would
continue for the season. Remembrance Day came, allow-
ing us a brief moment of reflection of how the sacrifices
of the past secured the pleasures of the present. The Cath-
olic Church Bazaar provided a wonderful opportunity to
save on the Christmas expenditures, while the Lions
Monte Carlo provided a fun-filled way to capture the
floating charitable dollar.

As the pace towards the year-end continued to grow,
so did the activities. December heralded the Annual Fire-
men’s Ball to the tune of a “Burning Success Story’’. Mini-
flea markets continued while the children’s Xmas Party

~ began to take shape. Santa and his wifé arrived in town

for this party before stepping out to Good Hope Lake,
spreading even more of the Xmas cheer. The Archery Club
began to string their bows, as Xmas movies lent to the ex-
citement of not only December 25, but to ever impending
New Year’s Eve. Over 200 people came to bring the New
Year in with style, as once again the local band, with help
from the Disco Master, Dave Chapple, provided the mood

music.

It was 1986! The sky was dark, the air was cold and
the people were still smiling. Ice sports were in full swing
with Ms. Holly Harris coming into town to aid the flailing
Figure Skating Club. Meetings began in preparation for
the N.I.F. Games, while a desperate bid was made by cul-
tural enthusiasts to begin a structured Arts Council.
The McDame Gun Club polished their barrels as the new
commitee members were elected.

U.B.C. Facilities Conference

The Annual B.C. Recreation Facilities Conference
was held at the University of British Columbia from
June 1-4, 1986. Close to sixty delegates attended inclu-
ding Gary Periard from Cassiar. All the latest equipment
was on display for the various recreation facilities in
communities, and this gave each delegate an opportunity
to have a hands-on demonstration and talk directly to
the sales personnel.

The sessions dealt with Facility Management. and
guest speakers such as Dr. Eric Broom - Recreation Con-
sultant - U.B.C. talked on how to maximize the use of
our facilities with the minimum of expense. A slide pre-
sentation was given by Dr. Broom, on the new ideas of
facilities coming out of Europe, such as leisure facilities,
complete with leisure pools.

One session dealt with insurance, and the direction
that insurance companies and recreation centres are
going in order to keep all parties happy. A panel was
set up with an insurance adjustor, a lawyer dealing with
claims, and an insurance broker. Following their short
comments on what is happening,-an open question per-
iod gave the delegates an opportunity to find out about
their respective coverage in their facilities. This session
proved to be a very important one for delegates, as in-
surance coverage has been on everyone’s mind due to the
large settlements made recently.

Another session dealt with personality traits, and an
individual analysis was done on each of the delegates,
resulting in each delegate finding out their own personal
traits. This session gave us ideas as to how we work with
various commissions and boards in our communities and
what type of people sit on these boards. The person in
charge of this session gave us handouts in order that we
could bring them back and try them out on our various
volunteer board members.

This conference is always worthwhile attending
because it has various facility managers attending which
means that “bull sessions” held following the regular
sessions are always helpful, especially if you have prob-
lems.

Again, there was to be no rest for the wicked. The
pace began to accelerate as the Cassiar contingent sallied
forth to compete in the B.C.N.W. Games in Smithers,
once more placing our small community on the map. Mini
flea markets and hockey tournaments prevailed once again
with the addition of an inter-school basketball tourna-
ment. 2

The Friendship Games began to loom largely in our
minds as the organizational committees began to work in
earnest. The latest fashion trend had prompted a model-
ling clinic, which glided along into the Ides of March. Our
motto at the Club was “‘let it come, cause in 31 days it
will be over”.

Our elitest athletes competed in the B.C. Winter
Games to a thundering success. Cassiar hosted the Yukon

Ski Championship, along with the Cassiar Open Invit-

ational. The Figure Skating Club had their Test Day and
before we knew it, the Friendship Games were come and
gone!

“Mr. Bubbles” and his many friends were in town to
host the annual Schmoo Daze Carnival, which saw the
majority of residents participating in one form or another.
The Coughee House again put on a fabulous production
while the Ice Show again allowed us to briefly fantasize

what it’s like to be ‘Working For A Living’’.

Winter was just about over, or so they told us. Both
Minor and Senior Hockey hosted their annual tourna-
ments as we moved into April and winter wind-ups.

With the closure of the Arena, preparation began for
our eight week pool season. We unfortunately opened a
week behind schedule though the past weeks of a very
successful program has allowed that to casually fade away.

It was May and the last of winter’s worries were cast
aside in expectation of sun, fun and the real holiday sea-
son. Mother’s Day Brunch and Flower Sale were wonder-
ful, while the Golf Club decided it was time to begin pol-
ishing the clubs.

The whole community extended its warmest wishes
to Father Pauwels as he began preparation for his depar-
ture. Another C.P.R. Clinic occurred, and National Fit-
ness Activitiy Week was celebrated with “Sneaker Day -
Rally to Squash”’ and the Family Fun Swim Meet. With a
shortage of time for spring programs, softball and fastball
began with tournaments for all in the second and third
weekends of June. The Sportsman Dinner was hailed as a
successful form of acknowledging our volunteers and ath-
letes while the longest day of the year was right around
the corner. ;

It was an exciting, rewarding and fulfilling season for
us here at the Commiunity Club: a year that was made
possible by the input and cheerfulness of all those who
supported their ideas and ours for the benefit of the com-
munity. It was a season that I hope we can all say “When
do we start again?”

Summer is here and we have just-enjoyed < very busy

month of June at the pool.
Johnny Lifeguard has been seen around the facility
recently. He was very helpful to Lorraine on May 31st

_ when we held our Fun Meet at the pool. Thirty children

participated, with ribbons being awarded to all partici-
pants, as well as to the first, second and third place show-
ings. Tim Walters, Norma Ray and Kim Madore helped
Johnny Lifeguard keep time. Liz Strebel and Pat Lan-
phear handled the officials’ table and Lorraine Lanteigne
was Meet Supervisor. A good time was had by all - even
the weather co-operated. Ida Walters set up the barbecue
for the swimmers and parents att the meet. A special
thanks to Ida!

Eric Glyn-Jones has been preparing his Bronze and
Bronze Cross candidates for their water exam, which was
-held on June 22nd. We will report their results in the
next paper. It is good to see home-grown talent being
developed!

Jenny Beaton and Christina John were the first
recipients of the Swim Fit Goodie Bag, containing a cap,
goggles, shampoo and soap. Good work, girls!

Alex’ S Army wins
Slowpitch Tourney

The Sth Annual Cassiar Slowpitch Tournament may
have been the best of them all, with almost all of the
games being decided in the final inning. The Students’
two out, five-run rally that carried them to victory over
the Master Batters may have been the most exciting game
of the tournament but the 7-7 tie between Alex’s Army
and Mill Maintenance or the Sixty-Niner’s 2-1 win over
the same Mill team may have been the best played games
of the tournament.

Play was exceptionally even this year, with the play-
off team not being decided until the final game of the
round robin play when the Sliders defeated the Students.
In the Finals Alex's Army defeated Finning by a score of
10-5.

We would like to congratulate this year’s champions,
Alex’s Army, for the successful defense of their title.
And we would like to extend a special thank you to Gary
Swift and Paul Brohman, who organized the Beer Gardens
and barbeque for the weekend. Finally, we would like to
thank all the people who came out and supported our
tournament and helped make it the success that it was..

Ptarmigan

The curtain closes on another successful year for the
Ptarmigan Players. It has been a busy one - both in per-
forming, and organization. A personal thank you from
me to all members for their willing help and steady sup-
port.

Norma Ray and Rob McCauley were chosen as top
award winners for their volunteer work for the Players
this past year.

The club’s annual picnic was held at Simmons Lake
on June 15th. Theatre games, a barbecue and special
club awards were presented. ;

We are planning an improvisational Theatre Night in
October and’a full Christmas production. Both will go
into rehearsal in the fall.

Hope all of you have a great summer. There is lots
happening in the theatre world down south. Treat your-
selves this summer and support culture! See you in
September.
