He ends up by shooting his wife in a fit of rage, and the old people took off out the back door and into a patch of bush. They had wandered around until dark, scared to death and the old man had made his way to a neighbor’s place and phoned me. “When they had finished their story, I asked them who the dead man was outside. They didn’t know of any dead man, so I took them outside, and of course the man in the driveway was the son-in-law. But funny enough the old people hadn’t heard the suicide shot. “And so we got it all lined up as murder and suicide.” By this time it occurred to me that he had traveled a long way from the fire in the store at Soda Springs. “But, Mac,” I queried, “what’s all this got to do with the two old men that got burned to death?” “I was just coming to that,” said Mac with a grin, as he ground his cigarette butt in an ashtray. “You see when I searched the dead man, I found a note in his pocket confessing to the murder of the two old men at Soda Springs. And one of them had been murdered in the store, then packed upstairs. Then the murderer robbed the place and set it on fire. Regulation Brit- ish handcuffs are known as the screw- key type. They snap on to the wrists but a special key is needed to unlock them. American regulation hand- cuffs are adjustable; the more the pris- oner struggles the tighter the hand- cuffs grip. The announcement was made recently by Hon. William E. Hamilton, Minister of Reform Insti- tutions, during the annual tour by staff members from Queen’s Park offices of the Department of some of the institutions with which their work deals. The plan under _ consideration would enable a man to keep his job and still support his family while serving his sentence. The offender released by day would work under supervision and would be compelled to return to a county jail at night. The money earned would be turned over to his family. The plan would apply only to per- sons sentenced for certain breaches of provincial laws, and not to narcotic or habitual drunkenness cases nor con- victions under the Criminal Code. Furthermore, the privilege would be restricted to a select type of individual who would co-operate and would show anxiousness to reinstate himself in society. A similar system, in effect in Ontario during the 1920’s, was dis- continued on orders from the Federal Department of Justice. * * Inspector Hal Allen of the Memphis police department’s accident division takes the position that a lot of traffic grief could be prevented if drivers would treat the other motorists as they would a guest in their home.
