Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment made the announcement at an afternoon news confer- ence on Tuesday, November 4. No replacement was though Steve Bellringer, the President and CEO of Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment, said an immediate search is under way. Until a replacement is found, Bellringer will handle Quinn’s day-to-day responsi- bilities. “Ownership and senior man- agement are concerned about the development of the hockey organization,” Bellringer said. “We conclud- ed that a change in leader- ship is required.” Quinn was in his 11th year as the Canuck’s President and General Manager, in which he coached twice for the team, including the trip to the Stanley Cup finals in 1994. “We gratefully acknowledge Pat Quinn’s more than 10 Vancouver ing and who is going. He doesn't have complete power when it comes to mak- ing trades, as he needs the co-signature of the acting general manager, however, | expect we will see a very dif- ferent team in Vancouver. They are no longer last in the division either, the Calgary Flames are a dismal 3-12-4. years of dedication, accom- plishment and service to the Canuck organization and to Vancouver,” Bellringer said. The 54-year-old Quinn played 14 seasons as an NHL defenseman. He is most remembered for the “suppos- edly dirty” body check that basically put Bobby Orr out of the NHL. He also coached the Philadelphia Flyers from 1979-82 and the Los Angeles Kings from 1984-87 before earning his law degree from Widener University, Delaware School of Law. Quinn took the Canucks to the brink of the Stanley Cup in 1993-94, as they lost 3-2 in Game Seven of the finals to the New York Rangers. As a coach, Quinn’s career record is 357-285-102 during the regular season and 53-50 in the playoffs. He also lost in the Stanley Cup Finals in 1980, falling in six games to the New York Islanders. His teams failed to make the playoffs three times and advanced past the opening round all but three times. Wins! By Jeremy Fung The Vancouver Canucks finally broke out of their worst ever losing streak. They defeated the San Jose sharks by a score of 5-2. Artur Irbe started in goal and held on to the four nothing lead the Canucks built up. Bure opened the scoring on a penalty shot after a shark defenceman covered the puck in his own crease. Staios, Sillinger, Linden, and Lumme scored for the Canucks as well. Over The Edge - Page 11 HISTORY MADE IN BASEBALL by Bart Wingerak: History has been made in Major League Baseball. The first team ever to leave the American, which was found- ed in 1901, has left and switched over to the National League. “This was not an easy deci- sion,” Selig said. “To com- plete Phase One of Major League Baseball’s Realignment, and create a 16-14 team format, it was absolutely necessary for one team to switch leagues. Several teams were given that opportunity, but none accepted. The Milwaukee Brewers, mindful of the city’s National League heritage, and after conducting exten- sive local research that showed our fans approved such a move and receiving considerable encouragement from Major League clubs... the Brewers volunteered to make the switch.” Milwaukee will move from the American League Central to the National League Central. The owners gave permission, on October 15, by a telephone vote to make way for a team from one of the leagues to move over to the other. This movement allows the league to make the schedule so that there can be segments in the sea- son for inter-league play, rather then just playing the games whenever the sched- ule would allow them to play. While Milwaukee has been an American League town since the Seattle Pilots moved there prior to the 1970 season and became the Brewers, its first team played in the National League. The Braves moved from Boston and played in Milwaukee from 1953 to 1965. They won the World Series in 1957 over the Yankees. They then moved to Atlanta for the 1966 sea- .Son. “This is a day of both sad- ness, and great anticipation,” Selig said. “Sadness for the prospect of leaving a 28-year relationship with the American League and its member clubs, and (happi- ness) anticipating returning Milwaukee to its roots in the National League.” lron Mike Keenan Comes To Vancouver by Jeremy Fung Tom Renney was replaced as head coach of the Vancouver Canucks’ on Thursday. How Things Work In The Sports Department At Over The Edge. Some of you may be wondering how articles get chosen for the sports department here at OTE. It’s really quite simple. Anything that catches my attention will get in. If you have an interest in one of the sports teams/clubs here at UNBC | would be happy to put in articles about them. | currently have no feedback from you as to what you want. Remember that the newspaper (on good years) gets put out once every two weeks. All you have to do to submit an article is bring it to the OTE office (across from the Wintergarden) and put it in the sports editor box. | will accept written and printed articles, but | would prefer they were on a disk. (Microsoft Word is best - IBM format) Thanks, Jeremy Fung, Sports Editor
