By Joe Bowser Another punk show hap- pened again at the Art Space and this time there was an excellent line up for bands. Bands on the bill included Darryl’s Grocery Bag, and Removal, however there were some special guests opening for both of the bands, and if you didn’t show up early, you missed it. The first band was the Hextalls from Kamloops, BC. Their unique brand of pop- punk got the crowd going, however, unlike other bands, they are not currently going emo because i's popular. They played a very solid set and entertained the crowd, including old favorites like ‘I'd take an McInnis Slapshot in the balls for you’ and = ‘Drew Barrymore, Please don’t lis- ten to Diesel Boy’. They are working on a new CD and it will be released on a label that is yet to be decided. After a very solid, yet sim- plistic pop-punk performace by the Kamloops band, the next band, Removal, played their set. The main gimmick _ for jf this band was the lack of vocals, but that doesn’t mean that this band can’t rock out. Their use of sound effects was amazing and their guitar sound is superior to almost any guitar sound in Punk Rock today. This band is probably one of the most tal- ented bands that | have ever heard, in the genre or other- wise. Their set was not bor- ing, and they kept the crowd going without a lead singer screaming and jumping around, like the average punk band has. This band is an excellent Canadian band Leys s Photo By Joe. Bowser and | recommend checking them out. Next up was the headlining band Darryl’s Grocery Bag. Their sound was more melodic punk but that didn’t keep them from rocking the house. They played their song “Do You Like My Van?” which is currently on the Spawner Records CD Sampler “Give Us A Breakil” that has been fea- tured on CFUR FM — 88.7. They Wey also) = man- aged to get i the best Cc Tr 0 w od response of the night, despite the fact that half the audience left, since it was indeed a school night. In short, this has been one of the best shows that has ever been put on in Prince George that | have ever been to. | know that this is NOT the rave scene, however, after talking with one of the mem- bers of Removal about the lack of good live bands tour- ing, he told me about the cur- rent situation in Europe where live bands are making. a comeback due to the backlash towards e lec- 4 tronic music. Hopefully this trend will hit ma North America 7 soon enough and we can get more kids picking up real __instru- ments and playing music again. This show rocked, but the clear lack of local bands was entirely depressing and is my only complaint about the show. However, the scene is still far from dead since the kids were still out and ready to rock. Oh yeah, before | forget. Thanks to Stephanie for putting on these shows, she rocks!!!
