TELLER’S Error HAMPERS POLICE Enquiries were made at the various shops and licensed houses which he had visited, with a view to tracing any passing by him of £1 notes in the series A.88.H514001- 514500. Detective officers reported that amongst the takings at some of these places new £1 notes in the series A.88.E.514001- 514500 were found. In view of the simi- larity in the serial numbers of these notes and those first reported to the Police, a further enquiry was made at the bank in Liverpool and it was then ascertained that the bank teller had erroneously furnished the serial numbers A.88.H.514001-514500 for A.88.E.514001-514500. This mistake was unfortunate and but for this there is no doubt that the Police would have traced many more notes than was actually the case. Nevertheless it was possible to recover a total of 19 £1 notes in this series from seven different points of contact where it was found that the prisoner had been spend- ing money, and in addition to the recovery of actual notes, it was possible to prove that the prisoner, between the time of the mur- der and the time of the arrest, had had in his possession approximately £55. One of the notes in this series was actually recovered from the prostitute with whom Galbraith spent the night after the murder. Lavish spending by Galbraith was traced in the area of the Docks: in the district where Mrs. X. lives: and in Liverpool where they had spent the week-end together. On the pillow of the bunk there was a reddish: brown outline approximately rectangular in shape. In the depression formed by this outline, there were particles of a reddish- brown dust and minute flakes. On the top sheet, below the pillow, there was another reddish-brown mark—triangular in shape. On the ceiling of the cabin on one of the beading strips there were two marks, apparently recently made.
