s UNBC lifestyle March 14, 2012 - Over the Edge NUGSS ELECTS NEW BOARD MEMBERS : PRESIDENT Hi! My name is.Kallie Smith and I am a third year Psychol- ogy. student. I am originally from Williams Lake where I grew up with my mom, dad, two younger sisters and my dog. *Fun fact about the Smith family- all of our first names start with the letter K- even our dog’s! I have decided to run for the position of President, as I am ex- tremely passionate about NUGSS and UNBC as a whole. My pre- vious involvement with NUGSS has been as the Associate Director of Events. Through this position I was able to help plan, execute and promote all of the NUGSS events including the Backyard BBQ, Shinerama, Jump Back to New Years, the Pub-crawl, and many more. This position also al- lowed me to become very well acquainted with the policies and procedures that NUGSS follows. My involvement with NUGSS has also given me the opportunity to develop some very strong succession suggestions that, if elected, I will do my best to imple- ment, thereby helping NUGSS move in an ever forward direction. On a more personal level, some of my passions other than NUGSS and UNBC include the outdoors, running, swimming, cooking, music, friends, family and many more. If elected 1 prom- ise to work tirelessly on behalf of students, addressing issues and concerns, and working to create a positive social and academic experience for all. VICE PRESIDENT SOCIAL My name is Conan Winkelmeyer and I am a 22-year-old UNBC student that has been here for five years. I came from Fort Nelson, B.C. to major in two degrees - one in Education and one in Psychology. I hope that my running for VIP So- cial in NUGSS will allow me the chance to give back to the student body before leaving. I welcome the opportunity to work with everyone in order to improve the university experi- ence. Thank you for your on-going support. Cheers. In addition, he oversaw the finances of the Students’ Union that resulted in a surplus of tens of thousands. Currently, he is serving as the undergraduate student represent- atjye on the UNBC Board of Govemors, which is th¢ body that is responsible for the management, administration, and control of the property, revenue, business, and affairs of the University. As well, he previously sat on the UNBC Board of Governors’ Administration and Finance Committee. He is a current member of the UNBC Board of Governors’ Governance Committee. He has an immense love of UNBC and its community, with a particular interest in transit improvement issues, student af- fairs, and fostering a greater understanding of what’s happen- ing within NUGSS. Whether serving on the UBC Bicycle Cooperative executive board, participating in various Big Brothers Big Sisters Prince George programs, or discussing student issues with friends, he is an approachable, friendly, committed, and energetic individual with a deep-seated desire to help others. Outside of academics he enjoys several activities from cycling to skiing, longboarding to rock climbing, or simply relaxing with friends, eager to discuss a variety of issues and topics. My name is Ley Fraser and I am in my fourth year at UNBC with one more year to go in my undergraduate studies to complete my Bachelor of Psychology, with a minor in English. My family comes from Prince George, and I have lived here most my life. I love this university because you can always find interesting people to talk to, whether it is staff, students or visitors. At UNBC, you would most likely find me at the Northern Women’s Centre, the Northern Pride Centre, or the VICE PRESIDENT STUDENT AFFAIRS Hello! My name is Heather Ritchie and I am a third year Pol- itical Science student from Mission, British Columbia. I love to ride my bike, go swimming and I am also an active member of the new PG AllStars Cheer leading team and the Prince George local group of Amnesty International. Ever since coming to UNBC, I have strived to be an active part of our school community and have made many lasting friend- ships. I have been volunteering with the compost program under PGPIRG since September 2010 as well as helping out multiple times with the Disabilities Centre as a note taker and as a conver- sational English partner through the Learning Skills Centre. I am running for the position of VP Student Affairs under which my primary responsibility will be to be a reliable contact for the clubs on campus for information and support. | will also be required to prepare the clubs package for the new school year and organize “Clubs Day” at the beginning of each semester. I know that I will be an asset to the NUGSS board through this position both because of my strong social skills and my knowledge of the UNBC community. For the past year I have sat on the NUGSS Monetary Affairs Committee with the current VP Student Affairs. I am also an active executive member of the UNBC Sorority so I have firsthand experience with clubs policy and problem solving. I love organizing and communicating with people, both of which I believe are necessary for a rich and active student body! Please feel free to approach me with any questions and concerns. ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR CAMPUS SUSTAINABILITY Cameron Bell is going into his fourth year at UNBC, work- ing towards a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies. He is originally from Barrie, Ontario, and came out west and up north to study at a university that is actively working towards sustain- ability. He has been involved in events such as bicycle-blended smoothie sales, workshops, presentations, and awareness cam- paigns. He was the Associate Director of Campus Sustainability on NUGSS this year, and enthusiastically worked on initiatives like BC Foods Day, the University Farmers Market, as well as the annual Green Day. Cam believes that food is a key component of sustainability, and has worked hard this year to acquire funding and permission for SGU to construct a passively solar heated dome greenhouse on campus this spring, which will be owned by NUGSS and produce food for the Thirsty Moose Pub. He is hoping to be re-elected so that he can sup- port ongoing initiatives, start new projects, and help UNBC and NUGSS work towards sustainability!
