Page 8 -- Over The Edge — April 14, 1997 Catharine Kendall An exciting day at UNBC for those who participated on March 22, 1997 when members of the Prince George general public came up the hill to a free workshop on composting. A fantastic turnout of about 15 individuals with various backgrounds and reasons for attending took advantage of this great opportunity. The workshop was put on by PGPIRG’s very own Compost Action Group. The compost workshop was facilitated by Stephanie Capyk joined by special guest Taryn Hughson from REAPS (Recycling and Environmental Action Planning Society) who educated the group with a wealth of vermiculture (worm composting) information. ] don’t think that anyone walked away disappointed. The workshop started in the Doug Little Lounge where everyone aa Compost Workshop (Mar 22, 1997) got comfortable. We started with an “opening round” where each person introduced themselves and stated what they hoped to learn from the workshop. Some hoped to upgrade their present composters to be more efficient oy, and mouse free while others wanted to learn how to build their own composter from scratch and learn how to harvest the rewarding rich humus soil. The workshop went for a few hours, included a tour of UNBC’s composting site and ended back in the lounge with Teryn’s session on MARINE INSTITUTE Vermiculture. Ideas were exchanged, contacts wer made and everyone took information home with them to read up further. The Compost Action Group will hold more composting workshop in the future. Watch for advertisements or stop by the PIRG office for information. We are always recruiting volunteers, composting meetings are Monday at 5:20 at the PIRG office. Thank-you for the Opportunity.
