I didn’t know what was up, or if I had, Pd have done something about it .. . let you know.” Jimmy breathed deeply, as he thought over the man’s words. Pete had been badly wounded in the treeing of the cougar, but he had held it treed for two hours while Game Warden Dewar and another of his famous cougar dogs the wound in his chest gaped open—waiting for the time when he knew his master would come. There was no word to describe such courage and faithfulness to duty. Pete was just a real cougar hound, and he could thank God the doctor had given hope of his survival. The following day, amid the bountiful well wishes of the people of Malcolm Island, Jimmy left with Pete wrapped in bandages. Many were the congratulations and thanks, warm the pity and praise for the injured dog. The skin of the night marauder of Malcolm Island hung stinking and fly-rid- den, drying on the wall of a wooden build- ing on the island.
