This is also true to a large extent of the San Jose Valley, where several old and valuable cattle-ranches are a feature, notably the Enterprise and Onward, a general store being located at the latter point. Springhouse Prairie and Alkali Creek Districts. Roads from 114 miles south of Enterprise Ranch, St. Joseph, Onward, and Williams Lake link up with the Chimney Creek, Springhouse Prairie, and Alkali Lake Districts. Much of the best bench and valley land is cultivated under irrigation, settlement being confined to the valley and cattle- ranges along the plateau. Springhouse Post-office is on a ranch established over thirty years ago which raises many cattle. In recent years considerable butter has been shipped from the southerly part of Springhouse Prairie. There is an extensive area of vacant Crown land open in six of the townships, and Townships 78 and 80 contain stretches of good grass land and tracts of poplar and willow country with excellent soil. Surveys extend for about 6 miles north of Williams Lake, where a thriving town and divisional point of the railway-line is located. Much of this district is adapted to cattle-raising. A few miles east and connected by road is 150-Mile, with Government offices, hotel, stores, post-office, and some excellent cattle-ranches in the neighbourhood.
