the next few points come a little slower. You will have to pay more attention to details. Some slip on special grips, or adapt- ors. Last year at the Provincial champion- ship matches at Victoria I noticed one of our team with what appeared to be the butt of a saw log for a grip—but he shot 280 out of 300 over the National Match course to win the individual B. C. championship. Another had his Smith & Wesson .38/44 so plastered up with plastic wood and tape that I couldn’t get my hand around it. But he took second place at Seattle in the slow S. D. Personally I stick to standard grips with- out an adaptor, and just a short strip of adhesive tape around the butt. If I depart from this, scores go down. I use shooting glasses and keep both eyes open. If I dis- card the glasses and close one eye, scores take a flop. I try to get the gun straight in line with my forearm and use a high grip with the weight of the gun pressing down on the second knuckle of the middle finger. The trigger finger is free of the frame and touches the trigger only at the first joint. Get that habit of cocking the gun without shifting the sights out of line or the muzzle off the black on the target. It’s not hard to do after a little practice. And now here’s the third member of our advisory council—Const. Jack Henry, high individual in the B. C. Police league last fall, and last year’s individual champion at the Victoria Police match. Const. Henry gives us the following: “Practice, they say, makes perfect, and this maxim certainly applies in pistol shoot- ing. Endless repetition gets results, but don’t repeat your errors. If you have access to plenty of cheap ammunition, you’re in luck, but endless dry shooting is cheap and also brings results. Practice your dry shoot: Const. J. Henry ing on a bullseye reduced proportionately the size of the standard 25-yard bullseye. Five or ten minutes a day will soon make a difference to your scores. As for any par- ticular point—well I would say that trigger squeeze is about the most important thing. The gun should be comfortable in the hand, and any trouble you may be put to to get a gun that fits your hand will be amply re- warded later on. Don’t hold too long in deliberate fire. It shouldn’t take more than five seconds to raise and aim the gun and get the shot off.” Well, there you have it—three experts and their credo is ‘methodical, intelligent practice.” There are trick grips and ex- pensive guns—but naturally they are not laying down any pet theory, playing up any special gun model, or pinning their faith to some patent grip. They assume that you have a gun that fits your hand, standard ammunition, normal vision and ordinary physique. And practice is the answer.
