ee = SS ca 12 over THE EDGE-Monday October 17, 1994 ENTERTAINMENT MOVIES First of all, I must make a qualifier about this review. I left thirty minutes into the film, so the perspective given here is one made of severe bias and ignorance. Natural Born Killers is Oliver Stone's latest film, and is a definite departure from his normal world of conspiracy and government cover-ups. To be fair, the montage and cinematography in this film is brilliant. Stone skillfully juxtaposes many different styles and forms, ranging from campy horror film to animation worthy of The Wall. His transitions are sometimes smooth, other times jerky and unsettling. That is exactly the purpose of this style: to unsettle you. Within five minutes your skin is crawling and your stomach churning, resulting in a minor form of delusional psychosis. Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis play renegade anti-heroes, screaming across the United States in a torrent of blood and passion. Rodney Dangerfield makes an appearance as a convincing asshole, sexually assaulting his daughter to a laugh track. Make no mistake, this film does not hesitate to sit sex and violence alongside one another, and sometimes the distinction is narrow. The violence in this movie is brutal. No other word describes the foot-in-the-face, raw animosity depicted again and again. Before you see the words Natural Born Killers on the screen, three men and a woman die and a fourth man is castrated. Women _ should NATURAL BORN KILLERS by Damien Joly Rating: * Don't get me wrong. This is not another moral tirade about the disintegration of North American MORALS and the deleterious effect this has on our CHILDREN. However, there is a distinction between raw violence depicted for a didactic purpose (ie. The Boys of St. Vincent), and raw violénce depicted for a financial purpose (ie. name an Arnie film). I realize Killers is a satire about the glorification of violence in today's media blah blah blah..... However, if this was Stone's intent he failed miserably (at least up until I left...). Rape, incest, murder: all these things are shown so graphically you would think you would have no choice but to be slapped in the face with the moral message of the film. Or sol thought. The audience was gutting themselves with laughter!!!! Over and over again violence was reacted to, not with revulsion, but with humour!! That is not to say the audience was comprised of cretins and barbarians, only that Stone's imagery manipulated and convinced us that there was humour to be found in acts brutal violence. Oliver Stone, in making his point, hid the irony altogether and perverted the original intent. That is why I think Stone's satire is ineffectual. Maybe someday I'll be able to sit through this film and get a more open- minded perspective, but for now, Natural Born Killers gets one moose dropping out of four. be worldwide? We will do our best as time permits. Yours sincerely, Neil and Bob Dear Neil and Bob, I'm new in _ Prince George and. don't really know anyone. How can I meet some people? Sincerely, Shy. Dear Shy, The best way to get to know people is to get involved. Join some clubs or intramural activities. Even if official sign-up is over, most clubs and associations still welcome new members. Get to know the people in your classes. Be friendly, it will encourage others to approach you as well. Take advantage of the spare minutes before and after class to get to know the other students around you. And don't be afraid to introduce yourself to fellow classmates. Most likely you'll find out people are friendly once you break the ice. Besides if they scoff at you or turn up their noses, they probably aren't the type of people you want as friends any way's. Dear Neil and Bob, There's this guy I like and I think he likes me but when we're together we don't talk. It seems like any time spent alone is overwhelmed by a long uncomfortable silence. Then when we do talk it's always about mutual friends or the weather. I really like him but can't stand the lack of communication. What can I do? Frustrated. Dear Frustrated, Communication is very important to any relationship, especially one just starting out. Perhaps you can break the silence by directing the conversation away from the trivial and towards things that interest him. Sometimes silence can be due to nervousness. Maybe everything is still too new and all you need is a little time. Try doing things together, just the two of you. It's the best way to discover if you're really meant to be. Other than that I don't know what to say. [If it were me, I'd probably give it a little more time and if the situation still didn't change, well, there's other fish in the sea. Ending a relationship may hurt, but ask yourself: are you happy with things the way they are now? From, Bob.
