REGATTA DAY IMPRESSIONS “CENTENNIAL '71 REGATTA DAY Even the sun made its shy pre- sence felt for the Centennial Regatta on Saturday, June 26th. Chain Lake was its usual, benign, basking self and the presence of the food booth, bingo, and beer stands complemented the balmy atmosphere rather than detracted from the rustic spirit of the occasion. By the time the rally had run its course; the parking area was littered with vehicles nudging trees and already groups were gathering around tables or on the grassy bank sloping to the boat dock. Thanks to Bob Walsh the games, races, and contests drew people to- gether and the resulting intermi xing of families, adults, and children permeated the Regatta for the remain- der of the day. There were those who abounded in vigour and seemed to par- ticipate in almost every event going from Volleyball to Bingo. Others, like myself, drowsed and relaxed by the multiplicity of sounds, smells, and the tanning sun, preferred to quietly spectate or else to sit around and talk. To rate the day as a success is to underestimate the degree of plea- sure which everyone seemed to derive from the many events. | "The halibut steaks were deli- cious; | lost the sack race but it was the funniest ever; the beer ish't cold but at least its wet." Comments such as these gave a general air of nonchalence to the day. Sunglasses and untucked shirts were not unfamiliar, and the dust was all part of the spirit of the day. After the presentations, when overtired children were whining and an anti-climactic air had descended on the hectic day's events, it was time for many to leave. If only the prize medallions remain; it will all have been worthwhile. Trevor Gambell. “MY OPINION ON THE REGATTA June 26, 1971 at Chain Lake there was a Regatta with games and races and things to eat. ; The fishing derby turned out that a man won it with a1 1b. fish. My friend and I thought, what did everyone else catch? A sardine? He was given a fishing rod present- ed from Mr. C. Caron. Which was a nice gift... The bingo went on all day for only 25¢ you could get a card and try your luck at bingo and the prizes were different amounts of money. Everyone came with picnic bask- ets etc. For the dinner they had steak and corn'n the cob which went quite quickly. Only I think they should of had more garbage cans even when the garbage cans were over flowing people just threw it on the ground and at the end it looked like the dump. But it was a very nice day to have the Regatta and it turned out quite well. Dani Michael. (11) 14
