GE Fenians The recent school board decision to delete one principal position and operate both schools with one principal has not been a popular choice in Cassiar. High school students demon- strated and local residents de- manded answers to some tough questions. Spokesman Vic Pirie in an interview this week stressed the fact that the decision was not made as people appear to think, “at a drop of a hat," but has been under consideration by the board members for some time -as one alternative to cut back on rising expenditures. Part of the problem, Pirie explained was the recent decision from Victoria to change the method of funding to the school districts. The province announced the change at the beginning of the year, but have released no further details. Pirie added that a funding sum- mary has been received recently and that it looks’ promising. Following the receipt of the more detailed financial funding ac- knowledgement from Victoria, school board members will again consider their decision whether or not to go with one principal or to stay with the two principal system. et -Mately thirty students Students Rally Submitted by Ellen Artico, Vicki Kornelsen A recent School Board de- cision prompted a protest from the students of Cassiar Secondary School. On Thursday, February 8, 1990 at about 11:30 a.m. approxi- got to- gether and organized a march to the School Board office. These students had spent the morning making signs and preparing for this protest. The students were protesting the decision that the School Board had made of having only one principal to run both the elemen- tary and secondary schools. When the students learned that the de- cision was final they were quite angered and upset. The students felt cheated and neglected, not understanding why no one had ask- ed their opinion or wondered how they would feel if they lost a principal. continued on page 2 Decision Unpopular ee : : the Voice of Cassiar Country ace 1990 25° Rise 2 Fit to Reopen Sr Company officials are pres- ently going ahead with plans to reopen the pit which has been closed since last summer.
