In the Great War of 1914-1918 South African armies invaded the German colon- ies of South West and East Africa. Many men who had served in the old Natal Mounted Police took part in these cam- paigns; one squadron of the South African Mounted Rifles that fought in German South West Africa was composed entirely of men who had served in the N.M.P. Field Force. In these campaigns against the German colonies the troops were ably led by Generals Louis Botha and Jan C. Smuts, this time fighting under the Union Jack, against which they had fought so bravely and stubbornly in the War of 1899-1902, when Boer and Briton strove against each other for supremacy in South Africa. The Germans put up a determined fight for their African colonies, but to no avail, and they are now part of the British Empire. The foregoing account deals more with the military duties of the Natal Mounted Police than with police work, but while the events related were taking place those parts of the Colony not effected by war were being efficiently policed by the force, which was by no means behind the times in its methods of dealing with criminals. The white population of Natal was always in- clined to be law abiding, but among the natives murder and manslaughter were common occurrences, and a great deal of cattle and sheep stealing took place. The work of the men on station duty consisted chiefly of patrols and dealing with faction fights and cattle stealing cases. The Zulu H.R.H. the Duke of Kent visited the capital on August 7th and 8th.
