Lake, June 27; Sixteen Mile Lake, August 23. In every instance the habitat was one of deep woods Hermit Thrush--Hylocichla guttata (Pallas). This was one of the commoner summer visitants to Baker Creek Valley. Tne first was seen at Puntchesakut Lake, May 6, and on May 8 ten were found in various types of woodland habitat. Thereafter the song, first heard on May 8, became one of the most familiar sounds in the forest. Mated pairs were met with in many parts of the semi-open lodgepole pine and aspen woods; this habitat was the one most favoured. At Milburn Lake, June 10, a male was under intermittent obser- vation for half an hour. This bird was perched on the extreme tip of an upright dead branch that stood about five feet above the massed upper foliage of a cottonwood--just such a perch a fly- catcher would choose. It sang at short intervals during all the time I was within hearing. Hermit thrushes were heard also in the deep woods at Summit Lake in late June but there it was less plentiful than the olive- backed thrush. In the Red Rose Basin, Rocher Deboule Mountain, it was common in an entirely different type of habitat, viz.; the low alpine fir thickets near timberline. None was observed in the lowlands at Bulkley Lake, Francois Lake, and Ootsa Lake; it was not met with again until August 25 when one was seen in the coniferous forest near Sixteen Mile Lake. When I returned to Puntchesakut Lake on August 29 all of the nest- ing population apparently had moved out. None was recorded until September 2 when several were observed feeding on blueberries. These were considered to be transients. The subspecies represented is Hylocichla guttata guttata (Pallas). Swainson Thrush--Hylochichla ustulata (Nuttall). Recorded at Puntchesakut Lake, on the basis of song, May 16 and May 20. It was common and nesting at Bouchie Lake, where it frequented dense willow thickets. This was the common thrush in the following localities, viz.; Quesnel, where it was in full song on June 8; Dale Lake, Summit Lake, Nukko Lake, Chief Lake, Bulkley Speck $2
