SPORUS INTER-COMPANY BONSPIEL On the morning of February 13th eight stalwart members of the Cassiar Curling Club departed 'midst the Cassiar snows for a weekend's curling against fellow curlers from Clinton Creek, United Keno Hill, Whitehorse Transport Division and Territorial Supply in the first Iinter-Company bonspiel to be held. Their intentions weree questionable but they say it was to bring home the laurels to Cassiar. Rupert MacKenzie was at the helm of one team, complemented by Bob Munro as vice, Bill Zemenchik as second and Pat Witwicki to represent the fair sex of Cassiar as lead, while members of the local Mafia made a formidable: front on the second team in the guise of Frank Nitti as skip, Danny Dimitri as vice, Robert Duri as second and Bub Crossley managed to successfully in- filtrate this Mafia front to gain the position of the lowly lead. At 9AM on St. Valentine's Day play got under way at the Whitehorse Curling Club and immediately competition was keen as the first games unfolded. The Bob Lovell team from Clinton caused an upset right at the start by scoring a six-ender on the eighth end to take the game right out of the Bill Smoler rink's hands. The two Cassiar rinks each recorded onéloss and one win which resulted in a play-off between these two teams for the second event trophy. Frank Nitti emerged the victorious skip in a close and exciting game. At the close of the day's battle on the ice things turned to lighter vein. when the eight teams again got together, this time for a delicios meal and the presentation of -the trophies. John Drewe with his team from Clinton came through the day as the grand victors of the first event. Congratulations to you Clinton but rest on your laurels this year - next year you may be returning home empty handed. The Frank Nitti rink received the award for the second event and Bill Smoler and his team-mates were responsible for saving Whitehorse from total humiliation by taking away the award for the third event. The Ron Short Combo arrived to turn the evening into a gay social event and the weary curlers found their second wind sufficiently to end the bonspiel in a most genial manner.
