Safety competition for quarry and open pit
mines in B.C.

Management wishes to express to everyone,
their sincere thanks and appreciation for

the effort that has made this achievement
possible,

You will recall that this trophy is
awarded annually to the mine with the

lowest. compensable accident frequency rat

(A compensable accident is one which
involved more than 3 days lost time. )

Now that we have won this award, we are
all faced with a real challenge < to

| dmprove cur own record and to again have
the best safety record in our branch of
the industry, We KNOW the competition
‘offered by others wil) get a lot keener,
But we are not concerned with that just
now, Let's consider our own approach to
improvement. So far this year, the
record has been disappointing. Now there
is nothing wrong with our system of acci-
dent. prevention, but to be effective, it
has to be well directed and perhaps here,

we can improve,

Consider the sources of the past injuries
here, Nearly all resulted from unsafe
acts, yet they are still occurring, and
of course, producing injuries,

Supervisors are requested to pay the
closest attention to points 3, 4 and 5 of
the Safety System := .

5 = Can and will men continue to

work properly?

If men are observed to be saebink properly
(point 3) and they are properly instructed

and they are capable of following instruc-

tions, then the supervisor may answer
"yes" to point 5. Unless these conditions

apply, then the Safety System is not being

fully employed. In other words, super=-
vision is not taking advantage of this

opportunity,

SAFETY AWARD PRESENTATIONS

On the evening of March 7th, the Electrics
Department, headed by Alex Powell and
assisted by Art Lewis, were presented with
the trophy awarded to the department
having the best, ait record turing the
year.

Mr, Kerry presented the trophy with con=
gratulationa to Mr. Powell and commented _
at some length on the Departmental Safety
Competition, and stressed the necessity
for each employee to be safety conscious |
at all times, -

At the same time, a separate presentation |

of a fitted travel case was made to
Lew Palmer in recognition of his act of
safety (see January 31st issue) while
employed by the Tramline Department.

interest and has already promoted some
good hard games. Anyone interested may
participate, even if their nam is not
