LAURA BEVACQUA FEATURES EDITOR he Mayan calendar points to December 21nd 2012 as be- ing the end of our present age. The Mayan calendar revolu- tionized humanity’s perception and is set to reach the end of its 13th cycle. Changes around that time to the sun’s magnetic field could have consequences for all of humanity. December 21st 2012 is a date that is well known globally. Several hun- dred years ago, the Ancient Mayans predicted the apocalypse on this very date. With a 5,125-year-old calendar resetting itself to 0.0.0.0. on this date, many are assuming and prepar- ing for the worst. Perhaps we are already witness- ing the beginnings of this change with the desertification of more land, the rising in sea levels, and global hunger pandemics. Some have sug- gested that the 2012 date marks the end of the world or a day of giant catastrophes as planet Earth will col- lide with a black hole, passing aster- oid or a planet called Nibiru which will leave crippling effects across all continents. From books to films, the Mayan predictions and stories are buzzing. The anticipated movie, “2012” cost $260-million in production. Accord- ing to critics, everything including its special effects and alluring be- lievability in the possibility of what is to come makes it a film of massive proportions. It might be true that different types of epic proportions await us in 2012, though scholars from vari- ous fields have dismissed the idea of such threatening events occurring in 2012. Some professional Mayanist educators have provided clarity and assurance that the predictions of a looming end is nowhere to be found in any of the classic Maya scripting. Some have suggested that the idea of the world “ending” in 2012 in fact misrepresents classic Maya history and belief. Traditional Mayan prophecies understood and had a reverence for long cycles of time. The end of the Long Count, according these Mayan prophecies is about our shifting out of today’s ‘sleep’ state and ‘waking up’ to ourselves as divine beings by reconnecting to the Source of who we all are; the universal, divine consciousness that permeates every- thing. Based on this prophecy, this is a beautiful time for humanity and an amazing time to be alive; we would be living through one of the most im- portant evolutionary periods in the history of mankind. Some have said that we are en- tering a crucial evolution of high levels of consciousness that requires us to embrace our planet’s environ- ment. Can we go beyond certain dogmas and imagine what lies be- hind this existence? Could we de- velop a better understanding of our place in the cosmos? Perhaps hu- manity is on the brink of a New Age that will open our spiritual selves and invigorate our conscious being. Perhaps we will be able to tell our great grandchildren that you were alive, using and expanding our full capacity as a human being during a sacred and changing time in history.
