November 23, 1998 SOUNDSCAPE Over The Edge Page 7 B.B.’s mastery of his guitar is pleasing and ingenious to listen to. His band is incredible too. It is obvious that they know each other down to the last chord. Says B.B., “When I sing | play [Lucille] in my mind; the minute | stop singing orally, | start to sing by playing Lucille.” In case you haven't guessed yet, Lucille is the name which B.B. has lovingly given to each one of his guitars after a disaster during a performance in Twist, Arkansas in the mid 1950's. Two man got into a fight and know- cked over a kerosene stove, setting fire to the hall. Everyone made it to safety outdoors, but B.B. realized that he had left his beloved $30 acoustic guitar inside. He ran back inside to recover it, narrowly escaping death in the The process. Later on, he discovered the fight had been started over a woman named Lucille. He decided to give her name to his guitar. A bit of B.B. trivia. In B.B. King’s own words, “Red, white, black, brown, yellow, rich, poor, we all have the blues” and there is no better time to have them than while you are listening to his master- piece Blues On The Bayou. -Kevin Milos Beck Mutations (Geffen/Universal) MAX He’s back again...and now for something com- pletely different. After Mellow Gold = and Odelay, Beck fans all over may be expecting another “channel-surf- ing” album, varying in intensity between song and song. In fact, Mutations lends itself to maintaining more of a consistence between each song. “...some- times there’s that one album which has one mood through it, and when you're in_ that mood you just wanna hear that.” says the great master Beck him- self. There is even more of a concentration on Beck’s voice in this album. If ever we though that we would see the sentimental side -of him, this is where you will find it. Partly, Beck attributes this to the fact that the songs were NUGSS UPCOMING EVENTS % ye $5 ticket includes bus for pub crawl & ride home (on sale November 25 at NUGSS) January 5, 1999 - Battle of the Bands Open to all local bands mSubmit biography and demo tape to NUGSS by December 15, 1998 Five bands will be chosen from the demos to showcase on January 5, 1999 (Winter Orientation) Presented by the Max and NUGSS For more information regarding any of these events, please contact Jackie Eaton at 960-6427 or e-mail eatoj000@unbc.ca WINNER WILL OPEN FOR BACKYARD BARBEQUE! February 3, 1999 - Johnny Favourite & the Swing Orchestra $10 students / $12 public at the door At the Generator written before he went to the recording studio, unlike previous albums where the entire album was hashed out from scratch in the studio itself. The significance of this is that there was more of a concentration on making Mutations more dynamic and per- formance-like, resulting in a completely different sound. Beck recalls singing the lyrics on Odelay through a guitar amp mic, simply because he wanted to get out of the studio after eighteen hours of recording. Not this time! The neat thing is that although the entire album is mellow and decidedly “un-Beck- like”, based on his pre- vious albums, the band manages to incorporate all of the neat and funky sounds which they are so famous for, with song styles (although consis- tently mellow) ranging from folk to country to bossa-nova. Says Beck himself, “This is the headphone record, the Walkman record - more for those mid-afternoon reveries we all enjoy when we're tumbling through the high green grasses or meadows.” This is hard to back up if one hasn't been tumbling through meadows lately, but if you're in dire need some mellow, yet funky tunes to accompany you on those long stretches studying for midterms, then pre- scribe yourself this disc. -Kevin Milos Pop Goes Dance Various (EMI) Here it is! The newest remix CD of your favorite pop tunes has finally arrived in a top forty dance remix for- mat. Finally, you can bring all the cheese of a top forty dance club home, thanks to various contributing DJ’s who have taken it upon themselves to monoto- nize contemporary music with techno over- tones. Despite the obvious uncreativeness of these mixes, Pop Goes Dance is a fun mix which finds merit in the selection and compilation of the various songs. With remixes of songs such as Stop by the Spice Girls, Meredith Brooks’ Bitch, and Los Umbrellos’ No Tengo Dinero, the CD makes an instant dance party CD if you are stuck in a jam trying to get your- self a DJ. The beats are well done, never break- ing a danceable pace. Although remixing pop CD’s doesn’t demand the highest level of cre- ativity, it nevertheless is a talent unto itself, and is becoming more and more of a cash grab for record companies. Hey, if you can release a song twice, just changed a bit, then what's wrong with mak- ing twice the money while you're at it? Nevertheless, if you're shopping for a produc- tion line top forty club type remix album which allows you to get down to the beat, then this is a CD which you will no doubt thoroughly enjoy. It’s top forty techno! -Kevin Milos FUNKY ATTITUDE FASHIONS Need AFFOR ething FUNKY and LE for the holidays?
