10 2003 Culture Kornered on Kampus The folks here at Over the Edge greatly value the thoughts and opinions of the stu- | dents at UNBC. We give them a nifty forum | to have the stuff that they write published, | and we usually put a lot of thought into the | questions that we ask them in Kornered on | Kampus. That is not the case this week. Due | to the fact that everyone on the office has | midterms, and projects, and presentations | this week, the usual deep thought that is | usually devoted to this column is seriously | Try to sur- vive. That’s the first step I would probably go around and knock things down, and trample through someone’s garden, eat their garbage. Susan Janitorial Staff lacking. But that’s okay, because the ques- tion we asked this week provoked deep thoughts on the part of the people we accosted. Well, at least the question seemed to give them troubles. Probably because it’s a really weird question. What is this awe- inspiring question, you ask? Well...If you were a rampaging sheep, what would you do? Here are the deep, and well thought out | answers that some students gave us. I'd buy two more skis, and two more boots, and go to Tabor Mountain. Kyle, Forestry | Major I'd go say hello to Chuck Jago. | I’d tell him that we should have free parking, and 1 that Smart Card | money should go on the Smart Card. What's the point of the coin slots on the Smart Card machines anyway? This issue I will be going over different acoustic guitars at different price points that may fit into a student’s shoe- string budget. These acoustics can be found at Electron Sound & Percussion and start at $150. Tradition starting at $150. To begin with, there is the natural finish, laminate top for $150. The next step up is the Traditions that are coloured for $160, and finally acoustics featuring internal electronics and pickups for $260. Unfortunately, at this level, the case is not included in the price but a case is only $70. Art & Lutherie starting at $270. The finishes on _ these acoustics are orange, green, black, and antique burst made in Canada with 95% Canadian wood featuring solid top, and cherry wood back and sides. The next step is an almond top, or black cutaway with cherry back and sides for $300. Next we have a solid cedar top for $350, and finally, we have a spruce top for $360. All Art & Lutherie guitars come with a hard foam case included in the price. Simon & Patrick starting at $375. This product offers a solid cedar top and cherry back and sides for $375, a spruce top for $395, a cedar top with mahogany back and _ sides (also available as left handed), and a spruce top with mahogany back and sides. Also available are two 12- string acoustics from Simon & Patrick, a cedar top and a spruce top, both with cherry back and sides. In a more expensive range is a Simon & Patrick with electronics, and a spruce top with cherry back and sides for $725. All Simon & Patrick’s come with a hard case included in the price. Takamine starting at $355. Takamine offers a cedar top with mahogany back and sides for $355. For $550, one can get a Takamine with a spruce top with mahogany back and sides, featuring elec- tronics. Unfortunately, these prices do not include the price of a case but as I mentioned, cases are only $70. Beyond $600, one gets into more expensive Takamines, and entry level Larrivees and Martins. Right now, Electron can only offer a 12-string Larrivee at $1195 for entry level. An entry level Martin will run you $695 for a DXM Martin and $1150 for a DM Martin. Fortunately, all Larrivees and Martins come with cases. Though the Larrivees and Martins are a bit pricey, they deliver in quality and as a Larrivee owner, I can say that you would have to spend twice as much to get a guitar from any other maker as good. Also, I have noticed that Larrivee does not change its craftsmanship with respect to price. All Larrivee guitars are made with the same degree of care, and if you are paying more, it is because more time has been spent on that instrument, or the materi- als of are an expensive or rare nature. I have played a $12,000 Larrivee and it did not play any different than my $1,200 Larrivee. However, the $12,000 featured inlay work and rare woods. As well as acoustic guitars, one may wish to check out Electron’s selection of acoustic guitar amps. They have a 50- watt Ventura with a 10” speaker for $200. Up from that price point, they have a 65-watt Kustom with a 10” speaker for $450 featuring an XLR input for a microphone as well as guitar. Finally, a 100- watt Yorkville with 2, 5” speakers and a tweeter, also featuring an XLR input for $525. If you’re a student on a shoestring budget and would like to pick up an instrument then you should head on down to Electron and ask some questions. I’m sure they would be more than happy to help you. Electron Sound & Percussion is located at 3658 Massey Drive.
