Disability Service:
Assistance and Services for
Those in Need

at

Each semester UNBC's
Disability Services, with the
cooperation of student volun-
teers and instructors, provides
assistance to approximately
50 students on campus who
have disclosed a chronic ill-
ness or a physical, psychiatric,
or learning disability.

Services can include guid-
ance on self-advocacy issues,
one-to-one counselling on
scholastic or life skills develop-
ment, arrangement and
facilitation of academic
accommodations, and
funding for specialized
assistive equipment. The
student body plays an
important role by providing
services required by our
special needs students.

For example, each
semester volunteer note-
takers share their lecture
and lab notes from approx-
imately 70 courses.
Students also help with
course related tutoring,
computer training, and
recording reading material
to audiotape.

Services to ensure that
required teaching, examina-
tion, and physical accommo-
dations are in place throughout
each semester.

These coordinated efforts
allow students with visible and
non-visible disabilities to fully
participate and succeed in the
post-secondary educational
environment.

Graduate Students: Are you interested in an Academic Career?

The Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research, University of Alberta offers
more than 110 masteris and 60 doctoral programs and 285 research areas,
providing an extensive selection of research-oriented and professional

We also offer two outstanding programs to help you fine-tune your teaching
skills.

The University Teaching Program

This program provides teaching experience for graduate students interested in
careers as faculty at universities through partnership with a faculty teaching
mentor and a combination of theoretical and practical teaching experiences and
evaluations.

Outreach Program
This program facilitates and promotes extramural outreach opportunities for
graduate students by providing off-campus teaching opportunities in schools
and other organizations. Graduate students have an opportunity to distribute
knowledge to teachers and students, to strengthen their teaching skills and
teceive feedback on their performance.
